Ask the Editors: Jump Start Won't Work
Hard to ride when I’m attached to the hood of a car.

Dear ATVC: I ran my quad’s battery down trying to start up on a cold morning. Strange thing was I could get it to turn over and fire just fine with a jump start but the moment you disconnect the jumper cables, it would die again. What would cause this? Did I fry something out? KStek

The good news is a new battery should get you right back in business. The reason for the phenomena you describe is that your machine’s fuel pump is being run off the battery.

A common misconception is that the battery is used only to power a machine’s electrical and starting circuits. This may have been true back when most ATVs were carbureted but fuel injection requires use a fuel pump and some models are completely dependent upon a battery’s current to keep the pump operating. This is why a jump start can get the machine to fire up but removing the electrical source kills the engine.

Try putting a solid charge on your battery and your machine should return to normal right away. If the battery won’t take or hold a charge, replace it with a new one. Either way this should solve your problem.
