Ask the Editors: Do I Need Velocity Stacks?
The missing piece to the puzzle?

Dear ATVC: I’ve got an older Foreman that I picked up for cheap that I’m in the process of modding out for mudding. A friend of mine mentioned velocity stacks. What are these and are they something I should be considering for an advantage? DarYL

In the world of off-roading, the velocity stack refers to the tapered, trumpet-like shape of rubber or metal used to connect the carb or fuel injector’s throttle body to the air box.

In essence it is using the laws of physics for a performance gain. How so? Its shape actually acts as a cushion to dampen the violent reversal of air velocity that occurs thanks to the slamming shut of intake valves and the shock-wave that occurs as a result.

Additionally its length can be fine-tuned but again it all relates back to the idea of smoother, more linear airflow into your machine’s carb.

In truth this is a very rare modification, one in which we’re not even certain the parts required were ever manufactured for your particular quad. Unless yours is a plan of having one custom fabricated for your machine, the OEM design of the air tract should be plenty sufficient for mud/ recreational use.
