Ask the Editors: What is a Non-Serviceable ATV?
No-name troubles.

Dear ATVC: I bought a used Bode 500cc side-by-side that needed some transmission work but when I called the local dealers, they told me the machine was non-serviceable. What in the world does this mean? Shouldn’t a mechanic be able to fix such a machine regardless of branding? TIaslle

What you are encountering is perhaps the most prevalent of the problems associated with buying an “off-brand” ATV. While your assumption is correct that any mechanic with a strong knowledge of proper machine operation should be able to conduct repairs regardless of make, there’s a very simple explanation for why they’d choose not to:

1) Parts Support. No-name machines have no master parts catalogs or even serial number references to work from. As such obtaining OEM parts can range anywhere from difficult to downright impossible.

2) Service Manuals. Qualified mechanics often study service manuals and computerized break-downs of a machine’s internals before tearing into them so as to save the consumer money on unnecessary repairs. These do not exist for most off-brand machines.

3) Liability. As off-brand machines often use inferior materials as a part of cost savings to the consumer, no reputable dealership is going to guarantee a repair only to have something like a frame failure shortly thereafter transfer the liability back onto them. They are going to want to want to work with the brands they represent and trust.

Your absolute best bet in attempting to seek professional repair on a make and model machine without dedicated dealer support would be to take it to a small-engine repair shop not affiliated with any major brand; one that is comfortable fabricating custom parts in particular.
