Ask The Editors: Can I Make This Rear Windshield Work?

Your degree of success depends on material and which dimensions are off.
Thanks!
The answer to this one has a lot to do with the material of said rear windshield. If you’ve picked up one of the flexible PVC windshields you encounter around the web, you should have absolutely no trouble adapting it even if it isn’t the exact right dimensions.
Most of these come framed in a canvas border that can be zip tied to the machine’s frame spars with minimal fuss.
If, on the other hand, you have a hard PC / fiberglass pane, you may encounter some issues. In this case you’re better off being a little too small for the opening rather than too large. These units clamp-mount so you may be able to get it close then fill in the gaps with silicone or even spray foam to eliminate rattles and drafts. These are shatter-proof and really good about vibration so it’s a pretty risk-free endeavor to give it a try.
If it’s glass, you’ll naturally have the least amount of leeway. In fact, if it’s larger than the opening, you’ll probably want to relist it and get something better suited to your specs. If, on the other hand, it’s on the small side, you may be able to get away with a clamp mounting kit and some sealant but there’s some risk there to be sure.
It sounds like your motivation stems mostly from snagging a good deal and we can definitely relate. But since you can pick up a brand new PVC specifically made for your SxS here for $39, we’re not sure risking a plate of glass to the back of the head is worth the savings in trying to rig something up.
