Ask the Editors: CDI Testing

CDI readings range for the Xpress.
Your diagnostic process of elimination is spot on. Fortunately, testing the CDI box should prove even more painless than getting a reading from the stator.
Detach and remove the CDI box so that you can test its internal circuitry separate from the rest of the ATV’s electrical system.

Grab your multimeter, set it to measure resistance in Ohms and place a probe on each side of the CDI’s terminal plug to complete the circuit.
There can be a bit of variance in what you measure here but typically between 0.5 and 2 Ohms means the unit is functioning internally as it should. If you get a reading outside of this range, you’ve found the culprit.
