Ask The Editors: Charger Powered Warrior
Charger boost required.

Dear ATVC: My Yamaha Warrior will start no problem while I have the battery connected to the charger but once I unplug it, it’s hard to get started again. The battery is new 210cca so I’m not sure what’s going on here.

What you’re going to want to do is to put a meter on the battery and see what voltage it’s putting out. It’s likely the reason the ATV starts with the charger connected is that the system is drawing from the jump capabilities of the charger in addition to the battery itself.

You say the battery is new but has it ever been fully charged? Even brand new, some batteries arrive nearly dead from storage and shipment. You will need to put a good charge on it and monitor the rate of discharge to determine whether the issue is a defective battery or your quad’s alternator not recharging it while the machine is running. It’s quite possible that the battery simply hasn’t been fully charged since you got it and isn’t putting out adequate voltage & amperage to fire up the quad without the assistance of the charger.
