This is what you want to check.

Dear ATVC: I have a low hour 2WD Rancher ES that won’t shift, the indicator shows 1st gear although it seems to be in neutral because you can roll it.

I checked all of the fuses and the battery is new with good connections. I tried the Emergency shifter with a long wrench and it seems frozen, it didn’t want to force it to move. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

It sounds to us like your shift angle sensor may need replacing. This is pretty common situation with Hondas but fortunately a cheap and easy fix.

A replacement sensor (be sure to check the correct one for your year and displacement as we can’t pinpoint these things for you) like this one can be had for about $15.

The repair itself is quick and painless – it can be performed by any dealership but should you wish to perform the task yourself, this video should give you a general idea how to replace the broken sensor.
