Ask The Editors: How Far Can I Stretch My Tire Size on Stock Rims?
I wanna go bigger!

Dear ATVC: My Beartracker uses 22×7-10 front and 22×10-10 rear can I get tires a little taller and retain my same wheels?

Contrary to common misconception, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to just how far we can stretch the tires we mount to our ATVs’ rims. The reason for this? Even if the quad’s handling wouldn’t be too radically altered by going wider or taller on tires, the amount of fender clearance from one ATV to the next is anything but universal. That’s why in addition to larger diameter rims, lifts are commonly performed to accommodate bigger tires.

All of that being said – we have found you can usually get away with an additional inch on the first two numbers of your tire. In the case of your rears – 22×10-10 The 22 means the tire is 22″ tall when inflated, 10″ wide and fits a 10″ rim.

You could safely go 23×11-10 and gain a slightly higher stance and more contact area on the ground without altering your machine’s handling too radically or encountering wheel well clearance issues.
