Are triple digit speed numbers possible on a modern 450?

Dear ATVC: I have been wondering how fast a modern 450cc quad really is. My friend says he got his over 100mph. Is that even possible?

Believe it or not, it is – though pretty unlikely in stock trim. Why? The manufacturers set their machines up to be functional in the most conditions possible for as many types of rider as possible. So what this means for you and I is gearing choice that provides useful low end and abundant mid-range. Remember also that in stock trim, many components are designed specifically to “choke out” engine performance so as to meet strict government standards in terms of exhaust and noise pollution.

All of that being said, one need only to look at off-road races like Baja to realize a liquid cooled 450cc MX motor can pull speeds well into the triple digits. Bone stock, expect around 75mph if you can find the room to get it wide open in top gear.

If you were serious about trying to maintain triple digit speeds, mods to the exhaust / intake, gearing, and fuel mapping would be on the agenda. One other thing, though – when light machines like a race-ready ATV start entering triple digit speed territory, traction becomes a real concern. Similar to the way a plane takes to the sky after a certain speed is achieved, your quad begins to unload as well. You’ll notice most race machines run cut fenders – this isn’t just to look cool. They become wind catches at speed that further unweigh the machine like plastic sails.

We’ve heard many a tale of desert racers going as far as to wear a backpack full of stones in sections where the speeds get intense to further weigh the rear wheels / keep them planted to the ground.
