Ask the Editors: Is One CDI Box as Good as Another?

Dear ATVC:

So I was shopping around and saw this CDI Rev Box for a Yamaha Warrior:
Big Gun Rev Box CDI/ECU Yamaha Warrior 350 2002 – 2004. I was wondering if this would fit on a 2003 Yamaha wolverine 350 4X4 since they have the same engine? Thanks!

Believe it or not, while you are correct that the two engines share a variety or parts & part numbers, the ignition system is not one of them. In fact your stock Wolverine ignition box is compatible with that of Yamaha’s Big Bear 350 (YFM350FW).

The reason? The CDI box controls a machine’s ignition curve & hence the delivery of the engine’s RPM spread. Yamaha engineers were clearly more interested in factors such as low end tongue and more linear power delivery with the 4×4 Wolverine than what would be associated with a rear-wheel-drive, manual clutch equipped model like the Warrior.

Since we assume you ask because you would be looking to increase your Wolverine’s performance, we don’t need to warn of the risks of running an ignition box that could potentially inhibit your machine’s output. Your best bet would be to contact the manufacturers of aftermarket CDI boxes (like Big Gun) to ask if they offer anything specifically for your Wolverine.
