We’ve spent a lot of time behind the wheel of the GENERAL.

Dear ATVC: I’m considering upgrading my side-by-side and have been researching different crossover models. I keep coming back to the Polaris GENERAL because it seems to balance work capability and trail performance really well.

For those who own a Polaris GENERAL, how does it truly perform in real-world conditions? I’m especially curious about ride comfort, reliability, maintenance costs, and whether it handles tough terrain as smoothly as advertised. Would you recommend it over similar models from other brands?

Any firsthand experiences, pros and cons, or buying tips would be greatly appreciated.

We had the pleasure of testing the GENERAL not once but twice in recent years (we’ll link to those reviews below) but the short answer to your question is yes, it is a very solid choice if your use case balances work and play. We can state this with certainty as we also tested the RZR and RANGER line alongside the GENERAL.

The RANGER line crosses into this category a bit as well but you begin to find its limits on fast trail rides – where plushy suspension and bench seating remind you that the machine’s real sweet spot is tugging, towing, dragging, hauling, etc.

The GENERAL feels more like a RZR in practice. If this means nothing to you – think deep bucket seats and a high center console that hold you firmly in place. The suspension is much better suited to technical trails and high speed handling. And, while the engine is geared for a bit more performance than a comparable RANGER, it still has ample low end for work detail.

Like we state in our more recent review of the GENERAL, it really serves to not make buyers choose between a RANGER or RZR – the perfect middle ground. Perhaps our conclusion says it best:

Its biggest flaw is simply that it does everything so well that it sort of lacks a gimmick to make it stand out in the crowd. The GENERAL can’t boast the highest horsepower rating, the fastest lap time, or lift for maximum mudding potential, but it’s a low profile master in the real world – you know, the place the majority of us work and play daily.
