How much compression should the 250 single be rocking?

Dear ATVC: I have some questions about the 1992 Kawasaki 250 Mojave quad top end compression – What should the compression be normally? What should the compression PSI be without factoring in the compression release? Is there anyway to temporarily bypass the compression release to check for optimal compression?

The stock compression figure should be around 100 – 110 PSI. At the extreme ends of the spectrum 80 – 115 should still get you running.

There is no way to bypass the compression release but there is a hack we implement in situations like yours to save a lot of grief. Grab a cylinder leak down tester like the one shown below (they are available at any automotive parts store/ Harbor Fright etc.).

The difference between a compression and a leakage test is that you don’t need to concern yourself with what the optimal number should be on the leak down as it cuts right to the case with how much compression is being lost and from where.

This is especially useful if you’re concerned about where you are losing compression without tearing down and testing each individual component (valves, gaskets, piston rings).
