Ask The Editors: LT80 Choke Plunger Range
Probably not the problem.

Dear ATVC: I just picked up a 2002 Suzuki LT80 for my son. I have noticed the carb choke plunger only moves about 2mm up and down when pulled or pushed. It seems that the plunger should move more like an inch but I haven’t been able to find an answer on that. Having trouble cold starts while cold outside and have removed and cleaned the plunger but no further movement.

The Suzuki LT80 and Kawasaki KFX80 used a Mikuni carburetor from 1987-2006. Studying the schematics, it seems that a few mm is the full range of motion.

What type of cold weather woes are you experiencing during startup? It isn’t uncommon for an engine to become fussy in freezing temperatures for a myriad of reasons. We often run fuel with cold weather additives to keep what water is inevitably in your tank from freezing.

Carbureted 2-strokes sometimes started best in our past by holding the throttle wide open for a few attempts. That’s because jetting is often the culprit. The cooler temps changes the air-fuel ratio, meaning that you need more fuel for the machine to fire compared to the same settings on a warmer day.

2-strokes like the LT80 are especially susceptible to plug fouling as well. Next time it acts up, try removing the spark-plug and checking it for oily accumulation on the electrode and strap. Sometimes cleaning it up (or replacing, if that’s an option) will get you back in action.
