Six of one, half-dozen of another.

Dear ATVC: I recently blew the engine on my Suzuki LTZ-400. I brought a DRZ-400 engine after being told it would fit into my quad. (The seller won’t return my calls).

1) Does the DR-Z engine fit directly into the quad?
2) Does the LT-Z 400 carb mate directly to the DR-Z engine?

Well we have good news for you- physically, the motors are identical. So wedging the DR-Z mill into your LT-Z chassis will not pose any issues.

That is not to say the two were completely identical, however. The changes between the two include the cams, CDI box, head gasket thickness (the motorcycle engine has slightly higher compression) and carburetor.

We’re assuming you ask because the DR-Z engine you purchased didn’t include the OEM carb but the good news is the ATV’s carb will, of course, mate up without issue.

It is wise to expect having to make some jetting adjustments to compensate for the change in engine compression. Otherwise, the swap should be a plug-and-play affair.

And as per forum member Scootergptx‘s recommendation, you will find a lot more details about the differences between the models in this archived thread.
