Ask The Editors: Trailside CV Boot Repair

Rubber and rough trail conditions rarely play nice together.
Like us, you’ve surely heard of all sorts of trailside hacks for situations like these – epoxy, duct tape, silicone, a bicycle tube repair patch…we even knew a guy who claimed to melt a torn boot using the heating element from his vape.
Your best option, though, is to probably pick up an All Balls CV Boot Kit – No. 19-5036 that goes for $38. This plastic cone allows you to properly rebuild your CV boot without having to disassemble the axle.

Almost like slipping on a sock, you slide the cone right over the large side of the joint then stretch the rubber boot right over the cone. Push it down onto place and use the included band clamps to tighten it up once in place.
The kit includes everything you need (cone, boot, clamps and fresh grease) but you need to provide your own band clamp tool. We grabbed one from Home Depot for $20 and consider the entire investment a very affordable insurance policy.
For everyone else, this makes for a perfect stocking stuffer for the ATV / UTV nut on your shopping list.
