Having received acclaim and awards following its launch last year, the powerful and dependable Kawasaki MULE PRO-FXT is now available as a single-row seating variant called the MULE PRO-FX for the 2016 model year, giving full-size side x side customers another purchase choice. The MULE PRO-FX is from Kawasaki’s manufacturing plant in Lincoln, Nebraska, and the result of Kawasaki’s 130-year history in heavy industry. It is part of Kawasaki’s expansive side x side family that continues to be Kawasaki STRONG, built strong to work hard, backed by a factory three-year limited warranty and recognized as the market leader.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The strength of the Kawasaki MULE PRO-FX starts with 48 lb-ft of torque from its 812cc, three-cylinder engine with efficient Digital Fuel Injection (DFI) that has been tuned to deliver optimum performance throughout the rev range. Not only does it have excellent pulling power when fully loaded, but the MULE has excellent acceleration and hill-climbing ability when combined with its four-wheel drive system.
Engine
As one of the fastest MULEs ever built, the PRO-FX will help users get the job done more efficiently by taking them to the job site more quickly. It will also get them home again in plenty of time for that fishing trip they’ve been promising themselves. And that’s where the MULE PRO-FX scores again, because it can be loaded with gear and head back out to the lake.

Thanks to a high-output alternator, which delivers an incredible 60.8 amps at 2,000rpm (with the headlights on), occupants can power their accessories during the workweek or on all-day adventures thanks to a pair of built-in 12-volt outlets.

There are two outlets to power everything from phones and tablets to GPS devices and other technology you can’t be without.

Transferring the engine’s performance to the ground is a specially tuned CVT transmission that was designed for the impressive 48 lb-ft of torque. It delivers smooth, usable power to the tires, maximizing traction and contributing to the MULE’s precise maneuvering. The CVT also provides natural engine braking to help when descending slopes, with consistent engine hold-back to increase driver confidence, especially when the vehicle is loaded.

The CVT is combined with an electrically selectable 2WD/4WD system that has a dual-mode rear differential. Convenient dash-mounted switches allow the driver to instantly engage the systems, giving full control over the 4WD and locking rear differential.

The dual mode on the differential allows it to be fully locked for maximum traction, but it can minimize the vehicle’s impact on the terrain when unlocked.

Equipped with this system, the occupants’ workload can be completed quickly and efficiently, no matter the type of terrain or type of job being tackled.

HIGH CAPACITY HAULING & TOWING

The MULE PRO-FX boasts the largest cargo bed in its class. Measuring an impressive 54.1×53.3×11” it will easily accommodate a full-size wooden pallet (48×40”), increasing the vehicle’s usefulness around the work site.

Because it is built Kawasaki STRONG, the PRO-FX has a sturdy high-tensile, diamond-plate steel cargo floor with a maximum cargo capacity of up to 1000 lb (600 lb max in CA). This enables the user to efficiently haul large loads including gear, tools, supplies, hay bales and so forth. What’s more, the cargo bed has a gas-assisted tilt feature that makes it easier to raise the empty bed to allow easy access to the engine compartment.

The cargo bed also has integrated steel cargo rails and internal ridges, allowing loads to be firmly secured using the abundance of Kawasaki Genuine Accessories that are available from the Kawasaki dealer network. So whether you’re on the work site, hobby farm or heading to the lake with friends, the storage options of the MULE PRO-FX means you will get the job done, no matter what the day brings.

The tailgate is secured by two sturdy levers, which make it easy to open and close. The tailgate design also incorporates built-in cupholders, which come in handy when the tailgate is lowered. The cargo bed walls are designed with slots to accommodate Kawasaki Genuine Accessories’ cargo bed dividers. These allow cargo to be separated and stowed more securely for traversing difficult terrain.

If for some reason, the maximum load capacity of 1000 lb is insufficient for the user’s needs, the integrated 2” hitch receiver can enhance the versatility of the MULE PRO-FX. When equipped with an optional hitch, the vehicle is able to tow a substantial 2000 lb load (where permitted by state law) with the pickup truck-style receiver, giving the new Kawasaki the ultimate versatility.

In order to successfully haul such large loads, hydraulic disc brakes use 212mm rotors on all four corners. They combine with the dependable engine braking system to produce effective stopping power anytime, anywhere.

Dual-piston calipers in the front and single-piston calipers in the rear give the driver strong yet progressive stopping power. An easily accessible mechanical rear parking brake was also included to keep the MULE PRO-FX securely in place when stopped. A fuel injection control limits engine speed if the driver attempts to pull away with eh parking brake engaged.

SPACIOUS CABIN & EPS

With the tremendous durability and versatility of the MULE PRO-FX, all-day driving comfort was a high priority, allowing the driver and up to two passengers to get on with the job at hand. The cabin is particularly spacious, providing ample leg- and headroom, as well as a thick-cushioned bench seat for up to three full-size adult occupants.

All passengers are secured by conventional three-point seatbelts and automotive-style doors are standard to ease entry. The doors are also far easier to use than nets, making the occupants’ experience significantly more enjoyable with the MULE PRO-FX.

For the driver’s convenience there is a tilt-adjustable (except non-EPS models), thick grip steering wheel, which provides up to 40-degrees of adjustment to ensure a comfortable fit. Or it can be tilted out of the way to facilitate access to the cabin. All passengers have secure handholds throughout.

The EPS, EPS LE and EPS CAMO models of the MULE PRO-FX side x side take full advantage of Kawasaki’s advanced speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, which was highly praised during its introduction in the PRO-FXT. It considerably reduces steering effort, but ensures the steering has optimal feedback as speed increases, enhancing handling. The EPS helps to reduce steering kickback on rough terrain, reducing driver fatigue. Furthermore, it helps the driver enjoy a tight turning radius of just 16ft.

INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION

Another element of the PRO-FXT that was universally applauded was its front and rear independent suspension. By soaking up the bumps it provides excellent comfort, and by ensuring the tires remain in contact with the ground thanks to a generous 8.7” (left rear is 8.5”) suspension travel, traction also benefits.
Suspension
The suspension utilizes twin-tube, preload-adjustable shocks at each corner, with large diameter tubing for the A-arm design, ensuring Kawasaki’s legendary reputation for durability is maintained. Extra ground clearance (10.2”) also gives the driver confidence that the lower chassis will clear rocks and large obstacles. The MULE PRO-FX also delivers in the key areas such as an overall length of 133.3” and a relatively compact 92.3” wheelbase. The shorter wheelbase and high ground clearance provide a favorable breakover angle of 26-degree to reduce the chance of bottom out when cresting a ridge or clearing an obstacle. The high 78-degree approach and 64-degree departure angles further contribute to the MULE PRO-FX side x side’s off-road performance. The short overhangs reduce the chance of hitting the front bumper or scraping the tail when climbing and descending steep slopes.

The suspension uses rubber bushings at the attachment points to enhance durability and reduce service intervals. The MULE PRO-FX engine is also rubber-mounted to reduce vibration and contribute to a high quality, comfortable ride.

DURABILITY – KAWASAKI STRONG

With a background in the construction of ships, aircraft and earth-moving equipment, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd brings the same engineering disciplines to all its products, especially its side x side vehicles. So the MULE PRO-FX has a solid welded frame that emphasizes lateral and torsional rigidity for both durability as well as great handling. By eliminating flex, the ladder-type frame is able to provide good chassis response and traction.

A Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS) further increases stiffness of the entire chassis, giving the driver superior handling and driving characteristics, while also ensuring long-lasting durability and occupant security.

It’s not just the passengers that are protected – the MULE PRO-FX has integrated inner wheel wells because Kawasaki wanted to keep mud and debris out of the engine compartment, protecting its vital components. Additionally, steel side guards add protection from side impacts.

STORAGE

In addition, there is a handy glovebox as well as three dashboard pockets – with the center pocket large enough to accommodate the Kawasaki Genuine Accessories audio system – and two cupholders built into the bodywork in front of the dashboard.

DASHBOARD

The interior features multi-function LCD instrumentation. It provides a large, intuitive, easy-to-read display that includes an array of information such as digital speedometer, odometer and hour meter, fuel gauge, dual trip meters, water temp, 2WD/4WD operation, clock and parking brake indicator to keep the driver fully informed at a glance. There is a lights on the diff lock switch to indicate when it is selected. There are also two DC power outlets provided for convenient access to charge accessories and gadgets.

POWERFUL LIGHTING

The same high-power alternator responsible for charging smartphones and devices will also provide excellent visibility after dark and in poor weather conditions by powering the 55/60 watt Hi/Low halogen headlights that come as standard equipment on all models.

Additionally, the LE and CAMO models in the MULE PRO-FX range get high-intensity, auxiliary LED headlights with Hi/Low settings for even greater illumination (available as accessories on other models).

LED lights are specified on most high-end machinery for their extremely bright output, although Kawasaki’s engineers were also interested in the extended durability and low current draw that LEDs offer.

ONE MULE, FOUR MODELS

The MULE PRO-FX comes in four models, each packed with a host of Kawasaki STRONG features.

The non-EPS model comes standard with steel wheels and two DC outlets in the cab. It is available in the Super Black finish.

The second variation in the PRO-FX lineup is the EPS model. This comes standard with the same amenities as the non-EPS but with the addition of Electric Power Steering (EPS) and a tilt steering wheel. This model is available in Timberline Green and Super Black, with a contrasting graphic along the doors and cargo bed.

Next in the range is the desirable EPS LE. ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The advantages of diesel power are widely known. From superior durability to improved economy and great pulling power, diesel engines are found on the work site, farm and where users value on-site fuel compatibility as well as the ruggedness and reliability of a diesel engine.

The 2016 Kawasaki MULE PRO-DX side x side uses a 993cc three-cylinder diesel engine. This provides great power and torque, which is ideal for hauling heavy loads, acceleration and hill ascent. In fact, these are the most capable Kawasaki MULE diesel models ever produced, meaning jobs can be tackled efficiently, with less time lost when covering distances and more work done quicker.

The lean-running diesel engine meets Tier 4 Final emissions regulations and uses an air pressure sensor to help prevent excess fuel delivery when operating at high altitude. It also has an electromagnetic fuel pump, which means manual priming is unnecessary if the operator should happen to run out of fuel. Furthermore, the vehicle has dual external filters, in addition to the main filter. The second filter separates oil and water, acting as a pre-filter and helps to contribute to overall engine reliability.

Since most MULE diesel models will spend significant time on the job site, the vehicle is equipped with a powerful 55-amp alternator, allowing numerous accessories to be powered at the same time, including the huge range of equipment offered by Kawasaki Genuine Accessories. Transferring the engine’s performance to the ground is a specially tuned CVT transmission that was designed for the impressive diesel torque output. The CVT also provides natural engine braking to help when descending slopes, with consistent engine hold-back to increase driver confidence, especially when the vehicle is loaded.

The CVT is combined with an electrically selectable 2WD/4WD system that has a dual-mode rear differential. Intuitive dash-mounted switches allow the driver to instantly engage the systems, giving full control over the 4WD and locking rear differential.

The dual mode on the rear differential allows it to be fully locked for maximum traction, but it can minimize the vehicle’s impact on the terrain when unlocked.

HIGH CAPACITY HAULING & TOWING

The MULE PRO-DX boasts the largest cargo bed in its class. Measuring an impressive 54.1×53.3×11” it will easily accommodate a standard-size wooden pallet (48×40”), increasing the vehicle’s usefulness around the work site.

The tailgate is secured by two sturdy levers, which make it easy to open and close. The tailgate design also incorporates built-in cupholders, which come in handy when the tailgate is lowered. The cargo bed walls are designed with slots to accommodate Kawasaki Genuine Accessories’ cargo bed dividers. These allow cargo to be separated and stowed more securely for traversing difficult terrain.

If somebody needs to haul more than maximum load capacity of 1000 lb, the integrated 2” hitch receiver can enhance the versatility of the MULE PRO-DX. In order to successfully haul such large loads, hydraulic disc brakes use 212mm rotors on all four corners. They combine with the dependable engine braking system to produce effective stopping power anytime, anywhere.

SPACIOUS CABIN & EPS

With the tremendous durability and versatility of the MULE PRO-DX, all-day driving comfort was a high priority, allowing the driver and up to two passengers to get on with the job at hand. The MULE PRO-DX EPS and MULE PRO-DX EPS LE models take full advantage of Kawasaki’s advanced speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, which was highly praised during its introduction on the MULE PRO-FXT side x side last year. It considerably reduces steering effort, but ensures the steering has optimal feedback as speed increases, enhancing handling. The EPS helps to reduce steering kickback on rough terrain, reducing driver fatigue. Furthermore, it helps the driver enjoy a tight 16ft turning radius.

The EPS system works best when you need it most: at extremely slow speed and when stopped. Turning the wheel causes a signal to be sent to the EPS control module, initiating assistance. The ECU uses input from a vehicle speed sensor and steering torque sensor to determine the amount of steering assistance required from the system’s electric motor. At slow speed or when stopped, assistance is greatest, while assistance is reduced as vehicle speed increases to ensure stable handling.

INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION

Another element of the MULE PRO-FXT that was universally applauded was its front and rear independent suspension. By soaking up the bumps on the MULE PRO-DX side x side it provides excellent comfort, and by ensuring the tires remain in contact with the ground thanks to a generous 8.7” (left rear is 8.5”) suspension travel, traction also benefits.

The suspension utilizes twin-tube, preload-adjustable shocks, with large diameter tubing for the A-arm design, ensuring Kawasaki’s legendary reputation for durability is maintained. Ample ground clearance (TBA, 10” minimum) also gives the driver confidence that the lower chassis will clear rocks and large obstacles. The MULE PRO-DX also delivers in the key areas such as an overall length of 133.3” and a relatively compact 92.3” wheelbase. The shorter wheelbase and high ground clearance provide a favorable breakover angle of 26-degrees to reduce the chance of bottoming-out when cresting a ridge or clearing an obstacle. The high 78-degree approach and 64-degree departure angles further contribute to the MULE PRO-DX side x side’s off-road performance. The short overhangs reduce the chance of hitting the front bumper or scraping the tail when climbing and descending steep slopes.

The suspension uses rubber bushings at the attachment points to enhance durability and reduce service intervals. The MULE PRO-DX engine is also rubber-mounted to reduce vibration and contribute to a high quality, comfortable ride.

The interior features multi-function LCD instrumentation. POWERTRAIN

The character-filled, purpose-built 90-degree V-twin engine is revered for its exhaust note, stump-pulling torque and amazing flexibility. The 783cc engine generates its power and torque where you need it most – in the low- and mid-range powerband, making short work of scrambling up hills, slogging through mud or crawling over rocks. The Teryx4 side x side also delivers great fuel efficiency, providing ample range between fuel stops.

Transferring all that torque to the ground is a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with a centrifugal clutch assembly, and a three-mode electronically selectable four-wheel drive system that allows access to either 2WD (light steering, great handling), 4WD or 4WD + Front Differential Lock. The latter helps to provide optimum traction by simply rotating a dash-mounted switch.

The CVT is known for its quick response and direct engine “feel” in sportier riding situations, and its unique engine braking ability can increase driver confidence on descents, while turning and in rough conditions.

So whether it’s climbing a rocky trail, crossing a stream or just hauling down a wide-open track with three friends, the Teryx4 side x side has the ideal drivetrain mode to handle it.

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING

Easy, low-effort and precise steering are hallmarks of the Teryx4 side x side’s standard Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

The Showa-built system eliminates the traditional power-steering pump found on most of the competition, so steering inputs don’t rob engine power, and it is only active when the engine is running, so there’s minimal battery drain. Input from vehicle speed and torque sensors determine the amount of steering assistance – more during slow-speed use, and less as speeds increase, just like a state-of-the-art sports car. EPS offers additional damping, especially on rough surfaces, resulting in reduced steering kickback and bump-steer.

CHASSIS

The durable Double-X frame construction of the Teryx4 side x side takes technical terrain in its stride. The rigid, square tube chassis effectively combats flex to help provide superior handling over rough ground.

This stout frame was designed using detailed computer analysis and plenty of off-road testing to create the Double-X design. It features two X-shaped crossmembers bridging the frame’s box structures from corner-to-corner for maximum strength and optimum durability.

The extremely tight 16.7ft turning radius makes maneuvering in close quarters a cinch – a real benefit over some of the competition that can be forced to make multi-point turns in the same amount of space.

The frame is also reinforced by the Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS), which extends all the way out to the edges of the bodywork to maximize cockpit space and help shield the chassis and bodywork.

The Teryx4 side x side has underbody engine guards that offer an added measure of protection by shielding vital components; their smooth reinforced surfaces act as a skid plate when it might be necessary to grind over the occasional obstacle.

This impressive chassis package is further enhanced with a wide-track/wide-body design, which contributes to superb handling characteristics. The wide track helps resist body roll during cornering and boosts its ability to navigate rough terrain. Mid-engine placement also helps by centralizing the vehicle’s center of mass, which reduces the turning inertia and promotes fluid direction changes.

Large 26” Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires offer the type of ride comfort, control and traction you would expect from a Teryx4 side x side. Their construction and tread design helps maximize forward traction, while optimizing driver feedback for cornering.

The Teryx4 side x side has an 85.6” wheelbase, contributing to its tight turning radius and overall agility. The vehicle also offers a substantial 11.2” of ground clearance, helping to prevent it from high centering when cresting a ridge or obstacle. The high approach and departure angles (79- and 65-degrees, respectively) also reduce the possibility of fouling the front bumper when approaching a steep slope, or scraping the tail when exiting.

SUSPENSION & BRAKING

The independent suspension on the Teryx4 side x side incorporates one of the best names in the high-performance suspension business: FOX. This means that stout steel A-arms at all four corners are mated to adjustable FOX Podium 2.0 remote reservoir coilover shocks that offer 8” of plush travel up front and 8.3” out back, giving the Teryx4 side x side plenty of trail-taming comfort. And new settings for the Fox shocks mean the vehicle has even more composure at high and low speeds.

Kawasaki engineers collaborated with FOX to fit the Teryx4 side x side with the ultimate high-performance FOX Podium 2.0 shocks, which are adjustable for spring preload and 24-way compression damping, to tailor the ride to the terrain or the rider’s preference.

Kawasaki and FOX incorporated a dual-mode design ideology so the adjustable FOX Podium 2.0 coilover shocks provide everything from cruising comfort with four passengers and a full cargo bed, to sport-style bump absorption when driven solo. It’s a difficult combination to get right, but the FOX Podium 2.0 shocks get the job done by maintaining consistent, progressive and fade-free damping in all driving conditions.

With the performance and handling potential of the Teryx4 side x side, consistent brake performance is essential, and the Teryx4 side x side delivers with high-performance hydraulic discs up front. These use 200mm rotors gripped by dual-piston calipers for exceptional feel and stopping power. The brakes are recessed within the wheels to help keep them free from dirt, rocks, water and debris, while sturdy steel-braided brake lines help keep the pedal feeling crisp and progressive.

At the rear, Kawasaki employs its unique sealed internal wet brake, which feature internal components that are completely sealed from mud, water, dust and debris. The result is powerful and ultra-reliable braking performance whether descending hills or running on trails, wet or dry.

HAULING & TOWING
Teryx4_Cargo
The Teryx4 side x side excels at all sorts of tasks, from hauling family members to towing. Its 17.9 x 47.6”, 250 lb capacity cargo box is 8.7” deep. The cargo bed has a flat bottom that is big enough to hold a large cooler, several spare fuel cans or other essentials.

The bed has the ability to add Kawasaki’s optional tool snap-mount system, which allows quick-mounting of Kawasaki Genuine Accessories and/or tools to the bed rails. Four tie-down loops also help secure the cargo.

The Teryx4 side x side also features a latching tailgate, which can be removed without requiring tools for greater capacity. The tailgate also features molded drink holders for added convenience.

A 2” hitch receiver is standard equipment. This allows the Teryx4 side x side to tow up to a substantial 1,300 lb once equipped with the optional draw bar.

CONVENIENCE

Convenience features on the 2016 Kawasaki Teryx4 side x side include three DC power outlets (two up front and one in the rear) providing up to 120 watts of peak electrical power. Almost eight gallons of fuel capacity and impressive fuel economy mean the Teryx4 has substantial range, enough for a long day on the trail. There’s also a handy cab roof (sun top) to maximize comfort (standard on the Teryx4 LE and Camo models), plus a conveniently located beverage holder for each occupant.

The bold new styling of the Teryx4 side x side perfectly matches its performance. It includes a new hood and scratch-resistant front bumper. Along with its angular fenders, the Teryx4 side x side has a look that says “sporty” and “functional” at the same time. To prove the point, the aggressive-looking hinged hood opens for ease of maintenance and is finished in automotive-quality paint.

New lightweight polished 14” cast aluminum wheels on the Teryx4 LE model could garner a fair share of attention at any custom car show, but it doesn’t stop there. The Teryx4 LE also features a strong tubular-steel front brush guard, while both the Teryx4 LE and Teryx4 Camo models now receive four new high-intensity LED headlamps that are engineered to keep the path illuminated long after sunset.

INTERIOR AMENITIES

All four occupants will enjoy riding in the Teryx4 side x side during a long day, because it’s one of the most comfortable vehicle in its class.

Its roomy interior gives the driver and passengers plenty of hip, shoulder and legroom. Three-tone high-backed bucket seats feature high-quality cushioning and cold-resistant seat material for all-day plushness. The adjustable seats eliminate the need for a headrest and feature wraparound ergonomics to hold driver and passengers firmly in place.

A new feature is the driver’s seat can now be adjusted without the use of tools, allowing different sized drivers to comfortably get behind the wheel. The 2016 Teryx4 LE model incorporates everything on the EPS model, including its Electric Power Steering. It adds new lightweight 14” cast aluminum wheels for extra style. These are fitted with some of the largest tires available in the side x side category and provide outstanding rough terrain performance, obstacle clearance and cornering confidence.

In addition, the Teryx4 LE model receives four powerful LED headlights and a hard sun top to protect the occupants from the hot sun or falling rain. This vehicle can be purchased in a choice of Candy Lime Green paint, Metallic Flat Raw Graystone or Candy Persimmon Red.

Finally, there is the 2016 Teryx4 Camo model, which is equipped with standard EPS, four powerful LED headlights and a hard sun top. As its name suggests, the Camo model is finished in the authentic Realtree Xtra Green Camo pattern that makes it ideal for hunters, photographers, backwoodsmen or anybody who wants to maintain a low profile while off-road.

ACCESSORIES

A large selection of Kawasaki Genuine Accessories is available through authorized Kawasaki dealers across the country. As with all off-highway vehicle recreation, Kawasaki encourages side x side users to drive responsibly and to respect the environment.

All Kawasaki Genuine Accessories are developed in conjunction with the vehicle to ensure a perfect fit and functionality. They include items such as a snowplow and several WARN winches. There is a fabric cab enclosure, fabric, plastic and aluminum roofs as well as full-length fabric doors. There is a cargo box system that secures to the cargo bed using special clamps. Teryx4 side x side owners can also purchase an audio system, auxiliary lighting, tow hitch balls, a full and half windshield as well as gun cases and a mounting system. To protect Teryx4 vehicles off-road, there is a full complement of underbody guards and skid plates from front to rear, as well as light guards, a rear bumper, fender flares and more.
