Product Test: Quadboss ATV Mitts

The Situation:

Winter-time can be brutally cold and the human body needs to maintain a temperature of 98.6 degrees F to function. Cold temps often keep us out of the saddle and being the leading edge of the body in motion, the hands often taken the brunt of the cold moving air.

The Product:

Quadboss takes warm hands very seriously. How do we know? Because they offer a whole variety of solutions to the problem from heated grips to hard plastic guards. We took a look at the most affordable of their options, the $28.99 ATV Mitt (that’s for the black scheme, that price increases to $33.99 for REALTREE Camo).

Installation:

There are a lot of products out there that advertise themselves as plug ‘n play but when you open the box, “plug” requires multiple tools and a free afternoon. Thankfully that’s not the case with the Quadboss ATV Mitts. You literally take them out of the package, slide them right over the controls on each side of your ATV’s handlebars (sport, utility or anything in between), tighten the Velcro closures and off you go. Installation time is under a minute start to finish.

In Action:

Wow! It’s rare for something so seemingly simple to be so effective. Because the Mitts cover the grip, controls and levers, it’s entirely possible to ride without gloves on moderately cold days and enjoy the tactical feel of the controls on skin. Of course as the temps really start to dip, the Mitts are roomy enough to where operation with gloves on is doable as well. Even then the wind-cutting and insulation turn gloves that were decent in the cold into all-day strong territory.

Disadvantages:

One and only one. Not being able to see your controls can take some getting used to. It’s more of a learned adjustment thing in terms of the clutch and throttle (which operate primarily by feel anyway) but a more serious factor on units with complicated electric starting rituals or bar-mounted chokes.

If this seems like a concern, Quadboss will sell you their Clear View ATV Mitts – which include a clear polyurethane panel on each side to make viewing the controls without removing the mitt possible- for $59.95 a pair.

Conclusion:

It may sound dramatic but you’re literally only $29 away from a drastically improved cold-riding experience. Whether you use your quad to push some snow or just wanna cruise the snowy trails, these Mitts work better than advertised, are a cinch to install and come in at an affordable MSRP. Best of all, they are distributed through Tucker Rocky so locating a pair is a snap. Your local dealer can surely order them for you if they aren’t already in stock.
