Military guy needs help (110B Won't Run)
First Post
I have a brand new ATA 110B that has less then 5 hours on it. My son was riding the other day and it just stopped. Here's what I have done to try to fix the problem, any and all inputs and past experience would really help. I bought these for my kids as next summer I will be in Afghanistan (In the Air Force) and will miss the entire summer. Fuel: full Checked spark plug: I see spark, but still using the spark plug that came with it. I bought two 110s, so I swapped spark plugs and the one on my sons starts my daughters 110 but not vice versa. Thus I assume the spark plug is good. Carburator: Its the type that will not open due to the fact its held together by non removable pins (thats what I have been told by Superior Motor Sports tech guy). So I took it off and cleaned it the best I could. Fuel Line/filter: I pulled this line off the carb and the fuel flows freely. Oil level: changed after two hours use and is at a good level, so the engine is not frozen. My thoughts: 1. Try getting a new spark plug 2. check to make sure CDI is good, don't know how to do this or what a CDI is 3. Compression, don't know how to check 4. Timing, don't know how to check 5. Grounding wire, can't find it At this time I sent in the carb to Superior Motor Sports the carb to get a new one (under warrently)and will get the new one next week. The tech guy sais its common for brand new ATV to have clogs on the main valve and pilot valve and since I can't open it pouring cleaing fluid in it may not do the trick. your thoughs and help would make my day. Welcome to the forums. :)
Not uncommon for the carb to be shipped with gel pack thing to absorb any moisture. They should have told you to let it run for a bit when you started it the first time. If not, the gell stuff could be clogging the jets. But a good cleaning would get that out. If you could get the carb apart. Might want to do that when you get the new carb in just to be safe. Wouldn't think the valves have gone that far out of adjustment in 5 hours, but on the less expensive imports, anything is possible. |
thanks scootergptx
What would you suggest in regards to try to open the card that has pins in it. I was told it could not be opened, is that right. |
Not really familiar with one like that. If they're sending a replacement you've got nothing to lose by trying to take it apart. I would think it had to be in pieces to get all the stuff inside. Hopefully we'll get an answer to that from someone that has a little more experience with that type.

If memory serves me correct, you can grind off the heads of the rivets, and once removed, there are threads for the installation of screws. Don't quote me though, since carbs are so cheap we normally discard rather than disassemble the TaoTao.
If you haven't opened the carb, here is something that we find often helps with a sealed TaoTao carb. If you have access to an air compressor, remove the fuel line and give a few healthy (but not too healthy) bursts of air through the fuel inlet at the carb. Sometimes it clears it out enough to get the machine started, and running a heavy dose of SeaFoam in the tank just may clean it the rest of the way out. It's crude, and not the best way to treat a carb, but at this point I don't believe you can do much damage. I strongly recommend you run an ethanol combatant at all times in these machines. The openings inside are miniscule, I doubt the plating is very resistant, and today's gas is doing you no favors. IMHO, the SeaFoam works well as an all around cleaner/conditioner. Adding this to every tankful will prevent condensation from forming in the fuel system and helps keep things running smooth. 93 octane always. You can test the CDI by swapping from one machine to the other. If you have a good, strong spark, it's probably not the issue. However, if you would like to give it a try, your looking for this ..... Thanks for the reply. I got a new carb coming that can be opened, part of my warrenty. I will post in several days to let you know if it works. The seafoam is a great idea and I will get some. Up to this point I have been putting in carb cleaner into the tank, post carb problems. thanks again Tim |

Great, hope it works out. Just make sure when you reinstall the carb, the notch in the picture below is in line with the idle speed screw. If you reverse it, or it doesn't drop in correctly, the machine will start at wide open throttle. You should feel it drop in a fair distance, not hover near the top. Depress the throttle a few times afterwards to make sure it doesn't feel like it's binding. Good luck !!

Still does not run with new carb
Well I got my new replacement carb from Superior Motor Sports and my Tao Tao 110 will still not run. I got a new spark plug and it works on my girls exact same model so I now its good. I get a good spark, I get gas flow through the line to the carb (pull it off and it drains), I get gas out of the drain in the bottom on the carb (overflow line). So what else could be the issue. Less then 5 hours use, all on the road. My son was driving it at about 2 mph and its just died. No sputtering, noise etc, just died. Any Suggestions.

Spark, Fuel, Compression...
You have good spark. Crank the engine for a 15 seconds, then quickly remove the spark plug and see if it is wet with fuel. Add 1/2 teaspoon of fuel in through the spark hole and crank the engine. Any hint of starting? Then it is down to measuring compression. |
