oil sight glass

On the Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word Spam wordSpam word 250 i have been working on i noticed the sight glass on the right hand side on the shifter/clutch cover shows empty. But when i check the engine oil and the gear oil(im assuming) they are all showing full or in range?

I've seen one other vehicle with that issue. I didn't understand it either. The only thing I can suggest is drain it and add the recommended amount of oil (engine and gear oil) and see if you can see it in the sight glass. If not, then check the dipstick and just know that where it reads on the stick is correct. Why you wouldn't be able to see it through the sight glass is puzzling though. Does it run good or do you hear any grinding or anything?

Ya it will need a oil change once i get it running again. Ill have to see what happens then. It was running good until cdi went. Only noise it makes is when trying to start it it makes a snap snap sound. I used my scope and the sound is originating from the starter but i pulled it apart and everything looked good.. So im puzzled on that one

Could be coming from the starter gear. If it's lose or worn it can makes noises like that. I had a machine a couple of weeks ago that when I pulled the starter gear cover off, the inside was completely dry (it was supposed to have gear oil in it) and the gears in the case were rusted and lose. I'd say check your starter gear bro.

had the gears and everything apart. did not see any damage in their and everything seemed tight.. But that does remind me i should put some oil in their.. What oil should be in their and how much.. even when i used my scope it was loudest at starter the gear area was fairly quiet.. i guess next time i work on it ill pull the cover off again and listen and watch.

I use 80W-90 gear oil. As for how much, I'm not real sure. Usually the fill hole is set just to the side of the case to fill until it starts dripping out, but I have seen them on the top of the case also. In that case, I'd just put enough in it so you know that the bottom of the main gear is getting wet. As it turns it will get oil on the entire gear and transfer it to the others.

Figured out the issue with the sight glass. the dip stick must be the wrong one. Drained out the oil and would have been lucky to have 1/2 -3/4 of a ltr of oil in it. Filled it Up till it read full on the sight glass and it would read over on the dip stick. it probably took about 1.2 ltr or so before it was full. I feel like calling the last tech that worked on it and tell him to find a new job. Everything that I read on the last invoice was nothing but a Butcher job including the oil change and replacing dipstick
