Well, I didn't know it was called "Dead man's hole". I buried my beautiful new Kodiak, luckily someone with a winch came by. The airbox had filled with mud and water, that's how bad. Anyway, we tipped it on it's side, took out the plug etc but it wouldn't start and he towed me back. This was on Sunday. It is still sitting in my garage and tonight I have to clean it up and get it running. Any suggestions for me? What a shame that I did this.

If your airbox was full of water and or mud, I'd take off the carb and flush it out completely. Look into the intake manifold of the motor to check for crud there. Flush out the crankcase with kerosene several times. This will help remove moisture without wasting so much oil. You will need to keep a very close eye on your oil. If it is milky colored change it immediatly. I'd check and drain both differentials and check the belt/tranny area. Don't turn on any of the lights for a few days, let them dry out first. Also check the braking systems and oil all cables. You got lots of work to do.

If you got water in your air box, then your automatic tranny will be full of water for sure. Make sure you take out the drain plugs to let this water out. If the water that comes out is sandy or real muddy, then you will probably want to take the side cover off and try to remove as much grit out of the clutches as you can. If just water comes out, you should be O.K.

If you are not into mechanics, take it to a dealer or private pro you trust. Tell him all you said here.
Don't take it to where you may need to make warrenty claims at a later date.

definitely take therocks advice and don't take it to a dealer that you may have to make warranty claims in the future, if you decide to take it in.

thanks guys, tomorrow Im spending a few hours trying to get it running again. I'm really bummed out. I'll let you all know how it goes. Also, someone said I should drain the muffler, is this true?

Drain the gas tank and from the gas shut off valve you can not get all of the gas out I would remove the tank to get it all out.

While you have the oil filter off and drainplug removed, pull it over MANY times by hand to remove any in the pump, passages, etc...
But don't do ANYTHING until you determine that there isn't any in the cylinder.... If you have muddy water coming out of the sparkplug hole... DONT roll it over, start flushing the cylinder with some solvent... a BUNCH OF IT!!..
If you live in a dry area (not a lot of humidity) take the plug out and let it set for a day or so, then hit it with compressed air to blow the dirt out of the cylinder... If you roll over on it a lot with dirt/mud in the cylinder, it will scratch up the cylinder walls and can quite possibly break piston rings.. Either leads to engine teardown time...
Flush out the sheaves on the belt drive. Flush out the crankcase oil.. then again, then again, then again.... (U can use automotive oil for this process, you dont have a wet-clutch)
Drain the carburetor bowl, then PULL the carb. bowl and clean it out... Check the intake of the carb. for dirt, clean the air filter.. and everythign else that has been suggested.....
I agree, DO NOT take it to any Yamaha dealership for a "clean out".. If you have to take it to a different brand dealership.. DO THAT INSTEAD....
Good Luck!!!....
