What to check on a used 02 Raptor before purchase
#1
I've been spending some time looking at used 2002 Raptors and would like to know
the things you guys would check to ensure that everything is ok and that it hasn't
been abused???
chain / sprokets ?
tires?
compression?
air filter?
shocks?
plastic?
rear axle?
What should I be looking for to know if I should quickly walk away from one?
What price would be a good buy?
Thanks

The stuff you listed is a good start. Check the camber on the front wheels to be sure the frame hasn't been tweaked. Look for chipped paint on the frame that may indicate tweaking. Swingarm bearings. A-arm bushings. Ride it and make sure it shifts smooth. I'd say $4500 in good condition and mostly stock would be a good price if its in real good shape

if it has mods done to it, like headers pipes K&N extra wheels GYTR bumpers and stuff like that your looking at almsot the price of a new one if it's in good shape. If I was buying one, i'd make shure it wanst all chipped form rocks on a gravel road, and i'd make shure it wasnt rode in the mud. belive me if they ride it in the mud theres NO way of ever getting it ALL clean..... but thats just me, I only ride in the sand with mine ssoo ya..... O if it's got stock grips on it you can look and see how much whear they have on them that will indicate how much time is on the machine

more questions:
How can I determine use from the amount of wear on the tires?.. how quickly do they wear?
How quick does the chain wear?
What can I check on the engine to ensure that it has not been abused?
How critical is the break-in on the 4 stroke?
I am looking for a stock machine to start with and then mod myself based on my riding conditions and learning curve..
Anything else you guys can help me with?

if they rode it in the sand then the wear will be very slight. If they rode it on gravel then the tires wear alot faster then most bikes because your pealing out all the time. chains don't wear that much so if the chain is wore out then it's had alota ridding on it.... you can tell if it has been maintained by looking at the chain also, they rust very easy if theres no rust then hes obviously oiled it...... to check the chain just grab it and see if it had any side to side wobble if it has alot then it's got some time on it.... and you can't really abuse a stock raptor per say, you'll hit the rev limiter way before anything will ever happen to the motor. see if theres any grease coming out of the A Arms, if so then hes put grease in it wich means it's been maintained, ask him if hes had a dealer service it.... after 20 hours your suposed to take it back and have the valves, or how ever you spell it, adjusted. O also if hes got lotsa time on it check the bars the clutch lever and stuff will rub the paint off if hes got a decent amount of time on it..... also check the side of the case if they say it's got like 2 hours on it, your foot rubs all the apint off and scratches it, wich can't be helped unless you buy a guard to put on it..... ask him if hes ever changed the oil filter, i change mine every time i change the oil...... any more Qs?
