Default Front Brake adjusting on '86 350 fourtrax

I believe this should be my last post about this 4 wheeler for a while. When I squeeze the lever for the front brakes, it just squeezes right down like nothing, asif it has no brake fluid. and the brakes don't work. but it's fully bled. I think the brakes just need to be adjusted, I can see them move when I squeeze the handle with the tire and drum off. I'm wondering how it is you adjust these brakes? it's not quite the same on a car, these brakes have dual pistons; to make each brake pad expand separately. I'm wondering how they can be adjusted to fit the drum tighter so they actually work.

Yup, sounds like they need adjustment. There is a rubber plug in each drum. remove it and roll the machine so an adjuster is lined up and turn it with a screwdriver, using the hole as a pivot point. There are two adjusters on each wheel. Turning the dial one way will tighten the brakes, the other way will loosen. I usually tighten each, until they stop moving, then back them off a couple clicks. You should be pulling the front brake lever once in a while during the procedure, so the shoes can center themselves. Take it out for a ride and use them a few times and then retighten. Post all the questions you want, they've all been good legit questions IMO. I like to see some of these old bombs still around and getting some TLC.

Alright thanks. I thought those were them. I had to take them off and attack them with the WD-40 and vice grips to unseize them. I then put anti-seize grease on them and adjusted the brakes, so now they work great. Thanks again.

Hey guys I just got an 86 350 ! It needs a little work but hey I got it for $1050 Canadian. The front right joint needs to be rebuilt or replaced, the tires are bald, it needs brakes, and it needs a new ignition. The top end of the engine was just rebuilt by the local Honda dealer (the engine sounds really good). The guy just replaced the starter clutch too. This is my first Honda so I hope I have good luck with it. I had a 93 Yamaha Big Bear and I blew it up.
LOL

Good job. I recommend you read an earlier article I posted about it not having any spark. The starter gears eventually wear down and then the teeth brake and fall down between the stator and mess it all up. It's $350 new canadian without tax! I, luckily, just finished picking one up for $189. Oh, and this dzzy guy seems to know this 4x4 better than the engineers who made it.

Ya I read that the night before I got the 350. I checked to make sure it was charging before I bought it.
I knew the starter gear was fine because we started the engine with the electric starter. There is lots of power in these old 350's compared to the new Rancher. My brother has a Rancher and after 2nd gear its gutless. You only had to replace the stator ? I guess you ended up getting a new stator (not used).
Do you have any pics of your 350 ? I should have some pics of mine up soon. This is MuddyNewf
its just that I am on my other computer which was signed in under an old name I never used

Thanx for acknowledgement SEth22. I've been a tech for nearly 20 years full time (I worked parts for 6 years part time before that) and I cut my teeth on those mid 80's Honda atv's.

I love driving my buddies 350 and I find they rev like no other Honda. It has to be the 4 valve head? They are a great machine if you can find a carb for one that works half decent. I think that is what contributes to a lot of the problems with these bikes. You gotta love the solid axle front end in the mud hahaha. It dances just like a full size Chevy when you are spinning it hahah.
