Backfiring sounds a little weird to me. What are you doing when it's backfiring?? On the throttle, letting off??
Take a look at the plug and see what it tells you. As far as on the top end, take it out and open it up. Get to a spot where you can coast back in to your shop or rig and run it wide open for as long as you can. While holding the throttle wide open, pull in the clutch and flip your kill switch at the same time. Roll into your shop and let it cool down a while then pull the plug out and see what it looks like.
Black soot is too rich. Bone white is too lean. A little bit of color on the porcelain should be just right.
I ran into issues with mine being too rich in the middle of the throttle and it was a pain to try and track down. Just keep experimenting and you'll get it.
Hope this helps.

You are running way lean! You should be 168 left 172 right. Thats with the lid off.
