Vacation from Hell!!!
#1
Hey guys, this is an off topic post, but I just wanted to vent out a little. The wife and I went on a 4 day trip to St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands) last week and were hoping for some good quality time together in a beautiful tropical paradise, instead it turned out to be a vacation from hell.
It started on the Thursday we left. Our flight from New Orleans was delayed and we got shuffled around all over creation before actually getting to our destination. I figured it was no big deal, we were just a few hours later getting there than we had expected. We got to the resort that evening tired, but excited and anticipating a great trip. Later that night we decided to chill out in the room and toss a few brews, unwind and enjoy the evening. We later ordered room service for supper which turned out to be a huge mistake. The following day we woke up and decided to go downtown on the island to shop at the flea markets and jewelry stores, then later went back to the resort and had a few beers at the pool bar and went to the beach to soak up the sun. That's when my wife started feeling a bit ill. We figured it was no big deal, but she started feeling really bad and wanted to head back to the room. A few hours later she was in intense pain and leaving a trail in the carpet to the restroom! I assumed she just had a virus or something of that nature and it would pass......nope! We stayed in the room all day Saturday with her still in pain and the bathroom situation getting worse! I didn't think it was humanly possible. She was in such pain that I had to take her to the hospital emergency room on Sunday morning because she was so weak and couldn't walk straight with stomach pains.
Now this trip was really getting fun! She stayed in the hospital all day long Sunday and half of that night. She was extermly dehydrated and took 5 bags of IV fluid! We were scheduled to leave on Sunday but I had to change our travel arrangements due to the hospital trip. The airline made me pay $200 extra to change the tickets but insisted I had to go to the airport and pay for the tickets that day! I told them it was impossible and could not leave my wife at the hospital. The lady and I had a few words over that matter, but I was able to change the flight to Monday and pay then. I also had to extend for another night at the resort. I had to go to the pharmacy in St. Thomas to get medication for her that day too. I don't know if anyone else has ever been there, but riding in the taxi's on the island is a thrilling experiance! Really scary the way they drive, not counting how they rip you off for $20 bucks to go to and from one place to the next.
Well, Monday morning comes and my poor wife is still in pain, weak, and feeling even worse. I get her to the airport, go through customs and all the fun stuff like that and then we were fortunate enough to be selected for random searches. Now keep in mind this whole time my wife was literally having to hold on to me to walk and feeling horrible!
We arrived in New Orleans Monday night and I was fortunate enough for my in-laws to be waiting for us in their RV so my wife could at least lay down while we drove her 3 hours back home to our local hospital emergency room where they gave her antibiotics and more fluid.
We found out from our doctor later that week that she had food poisoning and it was salmonilla from the room service food we had ordered the first night there. It's been over a week now and my wife is just starting to feel better. I had to take an extra week off of work to tend to her because she could not get out of bed........talk about a lovely vacation!!!!!!
Sorry to rant on like that but the venting helps..........so, am I the only person on Earth with such good luck???

That sucks, I had a vacation just like that.. My wife got strep so bad she was in the hospital for 4 days! Worst case they ever seen with holes and absesses in her throat... ( I thought it had something to do with what we did in the hot tub but I dunno)
What resort was it, so i dont go there! oh and I think food poisoning comes within hours of eating, not the next day

I hope she is starting to feel better. Is the resort going to refund or cover some of your expenses?
My wife was sick and in the hospitial for a week after surgary and that's the worse. Nothing I did made her any more comfortable. Can you say helpless.
Just be there if she needs you.

Wow!! That sounds like our honeymoon. We got off the ship and decided to eat some authenic Mexican food. Bad idea. I was in the same position as your wife. Greg has draggin 7 suitcases through the airport and me. Then when we finally arrive back in Ohio, someone had slashed our radiator hose on our car so we were stuck and could not go home after being gone 8 days.
I feel her pain and hope she gets back to normal soon.

Smitty, I don't know if the resort will do anything, but I have called and they are supposed to get back with me. I do have all receipts saved though!
Warrior007 - I don't want to say the name of the place on the forums, but it was food poisoning for sure, and that is the only thing she ate the whole time we were there. I agree with you that it usually happens hours after. We had eaten late that night and it was fairly early the next day she started feeling bad, but it got much worse as the day progressed.
Thanks for the concern fella's. She is starting to feel better now - some 2 weeks after this happened!

That sucks, bro... get your money back and then some!!!
Food poisoning usually occurs 6-12 hours after you eat the tainted food... there are soo many different kinds, too. I had food poisoning about two months ago (take-out Chinese did me in) and I literally couldn't move for two days. It sucks sooo bad.
I hope she feels better and you guys get a full refund... talk about no fun!

I took my twins from Arizona to Chicago for their first birthdays. The kids came down with some viral bug called the rotovirus. Wound up in the hospital for 5 days with one of them. My son and I shared a hospital room with some brat who jumped up and down on the bed till I called nurses in to sedate the savage at 1am. Couldnt wait to leave the windy city. Havent left the house for a birthday since. Sorry to hear about your terrible vacation. Hope the wife is doing better.

Was this your first experience with food poisoning? You shoulda noticed the symptoms right away. Sorry to hear about your bad luck.
The resort should be willing to help.....I'm sure your wife wasn't the only person to get poisoned. Ask the Hospital she was in how many other cases they treated that day/night. I'm sure you will find more than one....prolly even from different resorts.
What did she eat at the resort? What was the St. Thomas hospitals diagnosis....they should have known it was food poisoning aswell.
