Just installed my new Edelbrock carb - WOW!

I just spent the weekend intalling and jetting my new Edelbrock carb. I love this thing! It has much more throttle response than the Mikuni carbs. You just tap the throttle and it jumps. No more lag or hesitation. It now takes 2 minutes to adjust (not rejet, there aren't any jets) instead of 40 minutes to remove the carbs, flip them over, take off the bowls, change jets, put the bowls back on, put them back in, take off the top caps, adjust the needles, put the caps back on, put the gas tank back on . . .
So far I have turned the needle about 6-8 turns richer, and I think I am still a bit lean on top. But it is making it very rich at idle, so I may need to check into switching to a different needle. Anyone have any info on tuning and all the different needles available? I also turned the pumper about 1/2 turn leaner.
The only hard thing I had to do was some custom fabrication on my Pingry airbox. The tubes coming out the front of the Pingry box that attach to the carb airboots are about 3/8 inch longer than those on the stock plastic airbox. In order to get the Pingry box to fit in I had to take the hacksaw to it and cut off 5/16 inch of the two tubes. Now it fits fine. I am taking it to the dyno shop soon, as soon as I get my starter problem fixed. I will post a comparison of the dyno graphs of the Mukuni vs the Edelbrock carb. I got it for $500 from Barnums Pro Products. He is the dude that did the R+D on the Edelbrock. If you have the money and want to go faster while making life easier, I highly recommend buying one!

Hey that's great!!! I just received my Edelbrock carb kit from Barnums Pro ($513 shipped), too, and it looks sweet. You should be able to shoot them an e-mail about the needle question- just be sure to include what mods you did to the engine.
I look forward to seeing those dyno charts!

I ran one for a while on the 400EX. Top end was FURIOUS! But I could never get bottom end (even trying every trick their tech service suggested) quite right. It just didn't have that snap off the bottom. I would get in trouble jumping, because it had a little bog on the bottom. I pulled it off when my daughter started riding the bike.

There was a post here awhile back with someone that had theirs installed on their bike, but to me it didnt sound like it was worth the money. Also, I dont see how one carb could be better than two???? I would really like to see the dyno on yours before and after if you have it.
Thanks

One carb is not necessarily better than two. Two carbs is not necessarily better than one. One Edelbrock carb with an accelerator pump is definitely better than the stock Mikuni CV carbs both in performance and in ease of use/tuning. Two FCRs are probably better than the single Edelbrock, but I really doubt that they are easier to tune, and they are far more expensive. If you want to compare the carbs to automotive 4-barrel carbs on a V-8, then the Mikuni would be like the average stock vacuum secondary carb that is on every old family sedan. The Edelbrock works more like a new Speed Demon mechanical secondary racing carb that has dual accelerator pumps. That is what I have on my '71 Camaro. The stock carb is nice and smooth, and what your grandpa would like to cruise around on a Sunday afternoon. The performance carb, like a Demon, has much better throttle response and all out performance. When you hit the throttle it squirts a shot of gas into the engine along with the first big surge of air, and you get moving! When you hit the throttle on the vaccum secondary (and Mikuni CV) carb the big rush of air has to open the slide or the secondary throttle body, and then more gas can be drawn into the engine, hence the little hesitation.
One nice thing with the Edelbrock is that you get rid of the choke cable. There is no choke on the Edelbrock. You just tap the throttle a couple time to get the accelerator pump squirting and hit the starter. Time will tell how well this works on cold mornings. Since I don't have headlights, and now have no choke cable, I am going to get rid of the starter/kill switch pod on the handlebars all together.
Installation is VERY easy. If I were using the stock airbox it would have taken about 1.5 hours to remove the plastic, tanks, old carbs, then intall the new one and put everything back together. Keep checking back for more info over the next 2 weeks as I get out to the dyno and the trails.

That sounds good to me! I really like the look and the air box adaptor it has. Matter of fact I was at a race about 6 or so months ago and there was an Edlebrock stand there with some reps. At the time they didnt have any to sell but said they would run around 550.00 shipped. But, like I said before, I would like to test it before I actually purchased it cuz I sure cant see that better than two at top end at all. I would sure like to to have the throttle response at take of though.

RaptorRacer1 I am glad to see some body less enjoy the benefits of the QwikSilver carb. If you are lean on top go to the richer needle. Did you get the tuning instructions it helps a lot.
