ATV Safety: Share Your Tales

I am new to ATVs and want to avoid getting hurt.
I would be interested in hearing about any close calls, most common mistakes, etc, and what you have learned.
Want to ride safe.
Thanks

If you ride in sand, get a flag. This will help deter wrecks on hills. Wont stop them all. But if no one can see you- they may hit you or vice versa.
Wear a helment! especially in dirt. Dirt is hard. Less forgiving. DIRT HURTS!
Some will argue that you dont need one in the sand. Wear one anyway at all times.
Wear the right gear also.
If you are new to the sport, then i suggest you get training on how to ride. The dealer should hook you up with this or ANY of the manufacturers can hook you up. Or call the ATVA.
Ride with some experinced riders and not a bunch a show offs
Respect your neighbors and the land you ride on. If you are a butthole in this, then riding areas get closed and neighbors call the cops on you and you give all atvers a bad name. R E S P E C T.
Respect your bike and maintain it properly. AND Get a bike that is right for you. DONT get a banshee or anything like that just to be cool if you have no experience. They are not toys! Like operating a car, you can get hurt or even kill yourself if you ride irresponsibly or like an idiot. Your skill will improve the more you ride right and you can get another bike later when you are ready.
Join an ATV club and the ATVA. This helps places stay open when we ban together as groups.
Have fun!

just curious as to what type quad you have. that may get a few more responses. just for the record, if you have a tblazer and it has a front rack, take it off!! it blocks the light at night. imagine yourself coming up to a 10 foot creek youre going to jump, and upon landing, find out it was really 15 feet and youve only gone 14 feet. the rack is now off, but my wife (its her atv) likes it. yeah, just about as much as i liked breaking two ribs and putting 3 gashes on my chin. the helmet is always a good idea, may have kept me from breaking my jaw, ouch!

I sprained my wrist last weekend...still out of comission......I broke the rule, DON"T RIDE FAST/AGGRESSIVELY IN A NEW RIDING AREA!
HOW:
I decided to fly up a hill....til the hill stopped suddenly....I bailed as the front dove into the 6 ft washout/hole, nothing was hurt on my new KFX 400...cool. I do ride with all the safety gear to include helmet, gloves, chest protector,goggles...and MX boots (which I just bought the day of this wreck, I think I would have wasted my ankle if I hadn't been wearing the boots!). I may invest in some knee guards/elbow guards as well...you can never be overprotected! Have fun...and be careful out there!

was riding with some dirt bikes one day, and we were done, so all had a couple beers and got ready to leave. Well, one guy showed up with a chevy shortwide 4X4 jacked to the moon and a six foot ramp, of course. that thing was nearly vertical! Since there was a bunch of us, we were gonna muscle it into the truck, no problem. BUT a hero emerged and offered to RIDE it into the truck. Put his helmet on, and got a run at it! I set up the camcorder.
He got a run at it all right....he shot up that ramp, went about 3 feet in the air, landed so hard that he popped the back window out of the cab in one piece and left a paint mark from his helmet on the top of the cab! and managed to keep it upright! I laughed so hard i threw up.
WHat a clown. he's so lucky he didnt get hurt, and when he saw the video, he vowed to never do it again..
beer heroes..it may be better to get loaded up before ya get loaded up.

Dont go ***** out the first ride , get to know the quad . Dont show off when friends are around , ride where you feel comfortable not where every
one else wants to go , do things when you are ready not when others say "you can do it" . Ride around the truck a little bit after unloading to get a feel for things , alltho you do pi$$ alot of people off cause you dust up the unloading area ( but who cares ) better safe then sorry out on a trail.
Too many donuts at one time causes one wheeled wheelies , everyone gets a kick out of it but its still pretty scary ...lol.
Wear all gear everytime cause the time you decide not to, you will eat dirt .........
