Anyone have the lightweight flywheel on their Explorer 400? One of the very few complaints I have about the Polaris 2-strokes (this is my third), is that they rev slowly. Just wondering how much difference the lighter flywheel makes.

 

the difference is huge. i first had my flywheel turned and left the teeth for the starter. rev's easier-big difference- then had it turned down to 3lbs 9oz and a hugh difference. in my opinion it is well worth it. you will like it.

Do you lose the starter with the RCR flywheel?

 

I had a local machinest turn my stock flywheel down and balanced. there are two options:1 turn it down but keep the teeth on the flywheel to still be able to use an electric starter, or 2.have the flywheel turned with the teeth removed and then use the recoil pull starter. It alot cheaper to have your stock flywheel turned and balanced.

The 400 starts very easily with just the pull start. Like KY stated, even when you keep the starter teeth, there's still a difference, but when you lighten it down to remove the teeth....there's a big difference. On a regular basis, I always keep an eye on the state of wear on the pull rope though.

have you had any problems with the plastic reel breaking that's on the pull starter? the plastic pin that goes to the dog ear broke yesterday on mine- this was the original 95' reel. I was wondering if you know of any aftermarket replacement reels that would be stronger?

Mines still the stock 99 unit. I don't know any aftermarket units, but odds are it might have been updated since your's was new.....possibly newer design, or compostition. Possibly. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

 

By the way, a flatslide carb will also do wonders for throttle response.

 

When I first went from the stock carb to a 39PWK on my trail mod I was amazed at the difference. It is a huge change. Even if yours is not modded put a 34 flatslide on it. You'll have the big grins [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]
