2 riders on a Sport Utility Quad...
#1
I've been a "motorcyle guy," but i've finally decided to convert to ATVs... in other words, I don't have a lot of experience riding ATVs (and yes, I always rip my legs up when I try to put them on the ground while riding a quad).
I'm going to get a new ATV within the next week or so, but have questions about riding 2 people on 1 quad.
Everyone knows that the manufacturers constanstly stress that you should only ride one person on the machine. I don't know if this is backed by practical experience, or if they're just trying to avoid as many lawsuits as possible, or what.
I want to know what practical experience says. 2 riders... is it really all that much of a problem? I'm 5'11" 170lbs... my wife is 5'6" and 130lbs. I'm going to be doing trail riding and hunting on a sport/util quad. I haven't chosen between the Suzuki Vinson, the Suzuki Eiger, or the Kawasaki Prairie 650, and the grizzly. (any recommendations and feedback would be nice, even if it's not one that I mentioned)
But anyway... 2 riders, yea or nay?

For the atv's you recommend it woulden't be a problem. I have put many mile's on my quad's with a rider on back to drop them off at a deerstand and other drop off's. I have never had a problem riding with two people, just use common sence, don't try any stunt's and you'll be fine.

Hello,
I have ridden on the back of my friends atv a bunch of times, she ridden on the back of mine too. We've never had a proble before, we never try to do anything stupid. When she rides with me or when i ride with her all we do is race, and go on jumps. Its safe when you wear protection, helmets, pads, things like that. I think its fun to go ridding with two people, when your safe.

I do a ton of 2 up riding. There's bolt on second seats avaliable and also second sets of foot pegs. Check your state regs though because it's not always legal. Have you checked out the any of the factory built 2 up machines. They are becomeing quite popular in parts of Ontario.

bombardier makes 2 person quads that have a backrest, hand holds, and footpegs for the second person. they also have a longer wheelbase to accomodate for the added person. they have 1 type that converts the second seat into a storage area for your equipment. they r legal in every state (as far as i know) and supposedly do very well. the only problem that people have had is on off-camber hills. it can be a lil weird with balance.

I've done 2 up riding on a Cat 500i, which is one of the largest utility quads made. For the most part, it isn't a problem.
Until... you start going uphill. Steering goes from firm to marginal, it just doesn't want to turn. And it's performance on level ground doesn't warn you that you'll lose your steering on inclines. It feels just fine, then you hit a hill, and whoops - why won't it steer? If you're going any speed at all, and miss a turn, this could be trouble.
The 2 up quads (Bombardier, Cat) put the 2nd rider forward of the rear axle, so they aren't leveraging weight off of the front wheels. Aside from being safer, it's also legal - a lot of public riding areas don't allow 2 up riding on single rider machines.

All that stuff they are telling you about what not to do is correct, but the bigger the atv the easier it is to double. Grizzly would be a great choice for what you want. Riding double changes everything about the way you can handle your Atv.
