Default KVF 650 Black Spring & Shims

Sorry to work the hell out of this topic but I was just about to change the secondary spring and was wondering what to do about the shims. Some guys say to take all of them out and others say that you only need to take out one shim. What is the protocol for this job if you know the answer or have done it yourself? Any hints or comment swould be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Walt

See nyroc's 650 knowledge base/650 site. He posts here all the time.

I removed my only shim and the belt is quite tight. It will sqeal a bit when a idle but I'm hoping it will last a long time.

Thanks guys,
just wanted to ask if it was possible to keep the shims in there? What willl that do? Thanks about the NYRoc info as well. I just found the instructions a little vague that's all. Walt

Optimum belt deflection is 7/8 of an inch. If your belt is squeeling at idle, that means you are too tight, and that causes clutch wear. If you don't already have the Black secondary spring in your clutch, you should get one. They are worth their weight in gold. Put in the black spring, set your deflection to 7/8 of an inch and you should be good to go for quite a while.

When i had the black sping put in i had them take one (1mm) shim out. I checked my belt deflection a little bit ago and i was about 1 inch or so. I removed my 2nd (1mm) shim, so now i have no shims.... squeals at idle and even pulls a little in gear, but it sure did make it alot more responsive outta the hole! I've been told that a tight belt is the best way to go... mine is most likely a little to tight but im gonna leave it and see what happens, maybe it will loosen up a little in time.

Thanks for the response. I'm told that 22-27mm deflection is the best way to go so 7/8 of an inch sounds good. Good to have you guys around for help. Thanks again, Walt
