Id go with the 400 i had a 300 good quad, underpowered though. You could probably find a great deal on a used 400. Maybe a new one.

Go with the 400. You can get a relatively new 400 at that price, possibly with mods. The 400 is a great quad. The 300 is a well made machine but really underpowered.

I paid $4,700 OTD for a 2003 400ex several months from a dealer in WV. I would definitely go with the 400ex over the 300ex especially if you are tall. You will stick money into it to get it to run with a 400ex and you still won't have the 400ex's suspension and frame geometry.

You can get a used 2001 or 2002 400ex for $4,000 easy. Shop on e-bay too but don't buy anything you can't see. Ask specific questions about the condition of the tires, chain, sprockets, wheel bearings, axle bearings, wheels, plastic, etc. If you win the bid, go in person to pick it up. If it isn't as described including your addtitional questions, walk away from the deal.

You can find used 400ex's that price and sometimes you can find them with the 440 kit for a little over $4000. The 300ex is a great trail quad but you said you liked power and the 300ex will never have an overabundance of power, even with mods.
