Anyone know what it would take to make a 400EX street legal? I live in Idaho, but information from anyone in any state would still help. Thanks.

Only a suggestion, mind you: why not contact the Idaho Department of Motor Vehicles?

I had to make my Warrior street legal in order to ride on any maintained dirt roads in the Coconino National Forest even though I would never think of riding on paved roads. The rule here is that three-numbered forest roads require licensed vehicles and the four-numbered un-maintained roads have no restrictions. The catch 22 is that one must ride on the maintained roads in order to reach the other roads.
The requirements for making any OHV (dirt bikes included) street legal in Az are:
1. headlight
2. Tail light w/brake light & white lic. plate light.
3.horn..I bought a squeeze bulb type..it passed.
4.Mirror
5. Liability insurance ($25000 min)
6. Muffler/spark arrestor
7. Licensed & registered as a motorcycle

Yep, In oregon we have to be street legal if we ride on ANY road that a pickup can reach from a ungated main road.. that leaves out just about all of them. I have seen people get tickets for not haveing DOT approved tires to not haveing fenders.. they can always ticket you if they want

this man will give you any information you could ever want and more. I live in oregon as does he, and he knows about all of the laws and stuff, because thats his buisiness.

so go there, you will be very impressed!

btw, the idaho ODOT page has all of the requirements, and that page has a link for every state.

Last year when I bought my Grizzly I had the dealer make it street legal. Then this year after buying my 400EX I added: a brake light, horn, rear view mirror, license plate holder, and insurance. I just got it inspected Tuesday morning, so its ready to go now.

Cool, thanks for all the info everyone. Basically I was interested in finding out if it was even possible, and after hearing your replies, sounds like all I'll need is a mirror, horn, and brake light... cooool.

buddy don't forget tires. I had a list of every thing needed and it would cost about a grand to do it right.

Motorhead,
Those may be the only accessories you'll need, but don't overlook the license. Here in Az it is required to show proof of liability insurance before it can be registered, & if the insurance lapses the MVD is notified and the license is suspended. The jist of all this is that the quad or dirt bike must be qualified to ride right down main street even though it will only be ridden in the woods. Now that President Clinton's husband Bill wants to close all public lands to atvs, I'm not sure where licensing will put us.
I think your best bet would be to follow Tree Farmer's suggestion & contact your local MVD office to see what is required where you live
