Used Scrambler 50
#1
There is a 2001 scrambler 50 for $1600.00 in the area, and the ad says it was driven around the house by a 5 year old. Is this a good price for this machine and what should I look for when looking to buy a used machine as for as wear and tear. This would be for my 6 year old and would be driven around our yard. Thanks for any and all replies.

Dunno how good a price that is.. we paid $1799+tax for a new '02 Scram 50 with warranty earlier in the year. I wouldn't think that it would hold it's value that long. Kelly Blue Book says $1475 retail for an '01.
As far as checking it out... check the Brakes (ours didn't last long). Check the color on the plug to see if it's running rich/lean/just right. Look for signs of the chain rubbing on the frame anywhere. Should start right up with no hassles. Check teh kill switches to make sure they all work.
I'm sure there's other stuff to look at.
Check out the link to the video in my signature if you want to see a Scrambler 50 with some mods to it.. It'll really move now!

I know of two different friends who had Polaris 90's for their kids. They had several problems with them. I'm not sure what all was wrong. I do know that one wouldn't start and the dealer wouldn't or couldn't fix it. Be careful!

Bryce, Can you help me on resolving the rev limitor issue. I have a 2001 Scrambler 50 for my daughter (8 yrs old) and 2002 Scrambler 50 for my son (6 yrs old). My daughters was purchased used and sons new. My daughters is much faster than my son's. The exhaust restrictors have been removed (at the end of muffler and between the head/pipe). The trhotte stop opened all the way. CDI swapped between machines and my daughters is still restricters. What did you do to remove rev limiter? Thanks Tom

I swapped a CDI that I got on ebay to get it to rev freely... one of these -->>> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2426710389
Along with that, we added a Tecnigas Quadder pipe, Uni Filter, 105main jet, 5.5g Roller weights, 19T front sprocket (from a Scrambler 90) and removed the oil injection.. with this, it'll do 25-26mph with all 200lbs of me on it.
We have a 27T rear sprocket, and with that, it did 33mph before I chickened out.
Did swapping the CDI on these not make the other faster?

Bryce, Apparently the part I have been swapping is not the CDI. This part is on the right hand side of the quad made of an aluminum material with plug/wires. The part on Ebay is different (rubber/plastic). I plan to swap these parts on the two quads in the next day or so to determine if this will resolve the issue. Does the part sold on Ebay allow function of all switches (kill switch, ignition, etc...) or is some functionality lost. Lastly, where did you but the mods (pipe, filter, clutch springs).
Thanks
Tom

The CDI on ebay works with the exception of one thing... there is a gray wire on the factory CDI (at least on ours there was) that goes to a switch in the throttle. with the original CDI, it would keep the quad from running wild if the throttle got stuck... when it was in the idle position it cause the CDI to limit the spark... with that wire not plugged in, you just loose that safety feature. If you idle screw is not set right, you'll find out when the new CDI is hooked up... ours almost shot out of the garage when I fired it up beacuse it was set to idle so high! The factory kill switch, tether and key switch all work with this CDI... I tried another CDI and it did not allow the kill switches to work.
The CDI should be located above the carb mounted to the frame with a 1inch rubber band ... 1 large white plug and 4 other wires into a black box about 3x1x1/2 inches... it doesn't look lint the one on ebay, but the plugs are the same... The gray wire won't be used with the new CDI.
I got my parts from Tommy at www.miniatvparts.com Good guy and very helpful.

Bryce, I swapped the right parts this time and it did make a difference. Bought the box on Ebay. Thanks for the tip the gray wire. Looks like I'll have a couple of scramblers running the same to keep peace with the kids. Going to check on the mods in the near future. Thanks for all the help.

Check out this link for instructions on removing the oil injection.. it's the same for most of the 50 and 90cc quads with the yamaha scooter based motor. http://forums.atvs0urce.com/viewtopi...=oil+injection Change the 0 (zero) in s0urce to source in the link for it to work.. ATVConnection has blocked the words atvs0urce
The gain is not really from removing the injsection pump itself, although it does put a slight drag on the engine. The gain is from being able to run better premix type oils and being able to controll the ammount of oil better. Less smoke and less plug fouling.
