I was riding my 400 scrambler yesterday and noticed that it didn't sound right. I saw some grayish looking oil leaking from around the engine. Upon inspection i noticed there was a hole in my engine big enough to stick a small screwdriver through right behind the oil pump. The oil or whatever it is that is leaking out of it is full of metal shavings. What could have caused this and is the hole fixable or will i have to get a whole new motor?

Sounds pretty bad to me. Depending on where the hole originated and if it is in the head, etc. I would be very concerned about the metal shavings.

 

How does the engine run?

 

Sounds like your counter balancer was contaminated with water from your water pump seal.The bearings then failed and came apart.My friend had the same thing happen to him.He now knows the importance of checking the counter balancer oil very frequently.He had to buy new cases.There are some brand new cases right now on e-bay.

 

The engine still runs but is a little low on power and sounds like crap. I think CED is right about the cause of the problem because I had just changed the counterbalance oil the day before and the oil had a lot of water in it

 

CED: Where did you see the cases at on ebay? I can't find them
