Default 4 Hour ride report on HoleShot ATRs' on 03 P650.

I have a just broke in 2003 P650 with new ATR's. The ride is in the Northern Georgia mountains. Crush & Run and Clay roads. Fast & slow Trails. Wide Deep creek crossings up and down rocky and sandy banks. Some mud but no paddle holes. I have ridden this area on several machines across 10 years. Another P650, a Rincon, and a 2000 Kodiak 4X4 were also on this ride.
The tires are impressive. When I had them mounted I asked that 1 front and 1 rear be done so I could do a side by side comparison. They came out almost a full inch shorter than the OE Dunflops. My heart dropped. I took pictures and will put them up on my page soon. Reluctantly, with visions of me going to battle with ATP I told them to continue. Before pulling the Dunlops off the machine I measured from the center of the floor boards to the floor and got an even 12 inches. To my surprise and relief after mounting the ATRs the measurement remained the same. The Dunlops @ 4 psi seem to crush while the ATR's @ 5 psi did not, thus the same ground clearance.
Now the images of these tires on ITP's site make these tires appear rounded more than what they are on the P650 OE rims. Another P650 with OE Dunlops was on the ride and parked side by side the ATR's dwarf the Dunflops and the seat height looked the same on both machines. The fronts are much wider and ALMOST flat across the center and the rears are WIDE and look as impressive as they perform. Comments like "Look at the Beef Cake Tires on that Prairie" were common.
The ride with the Dunlops was plush and after putting the ATR's on @ 6.5 psi as recommended by the ITP rep I had to lower them to 5 psi to get close to the OE ride. The Dunlops ride smoothes out just a little bit sooner with speed than the ATRs', @ 5 psi all around. They are nice. At 4.5 psi these would ride like a Lincoln but I was happy @ 5 psi and did not care to try it.
These tires really hook up in all but the muddiest conditions. We avoid deep mud holes. We just do not like to put our machines through this kind of abuse. We are maintenance technicians and just cant see it unless there is no other way around.
They seem to have suction cups when in 4X4 and jumping over large logs. You roll up to it and goose it and the combination of the P650's power and the ATR's grip throw the front end into the air.
In deep wet sand they had no issues.
In the rocks they also seemed to have suction cup like grip.
Not once did I have the handle bars try to jerk out of my hands. Nice!
Handling was awesome. The P650 came with ridiculous toe-in. I put it @ Zero with the Dunlops and with the ATR's it turned somewhat easier than they did.
Great Tires!

I was thinking about buying a set of these tires to thanks for the info. I think I am going to use my stock rims and
and stock size. If you dont mind me asking, what did the tires cost and where did you get them.

They only come in one size same size as your stockers. I keep hoping they are going to come out in 26s and a little wider. therock if you have some picture we would love to see them. The only pictures I have seen have been from the side and can't see how they look from the front and rear. I was also interested in the Maxxis radial bighorns they only come in the stock size too. Hopefully they will offer more sizes of both soon.

there are plenty reviews to read with more than 4 hours ride time on these tires, if people are searching for more info. I've put 1100 miles on my atr's. They are pretty good in all but mud and deep water with soft bottoms. They tend to just spin uselessly in these conditions. Also, not sure if 'therock' tried them on concrete or real hardpack, but about half the atr owners on prairies have a steering wobble above 30mph, which some solved by balancing the tires. Many atr's have come from the factory out of round. ITP's quality control is dog crap IMO. I got lucky with a fairly good set but I won't buy them again.

I paid 245.00 delivered but that was from the dealer I purchased the P650 from. He was going to take my Dunlops off and collect 160.00 from me but the tires did not come in time so he shipped them to me for 245.00 and I sold my Dunlops for 160.00. I made out better. I really have 85.00 in them after selling the Dunlops myself. I purchased the 650 out of state.
I will post a link to my page with pics tonight.
I did go 35+ mph on black top with no wobble. I did not have the tire shop spin in the sealant because I have heard of the wobble and did not want to confuse a glob of slime or multi-seal with a tire defect.
I did the water crossing thing and they did ok. On some deep sections it felt like the 650 wanted to float or became light but there was also a good current to contend with. Sandy bottom combined with slimly rocks with the water over the tires. I was satisfied.
I climbed a pretty steep sandy bank with no problem.
What I do realize when following washed out trails is there is no handlebar jerking. They just roll straight.
As for Mud, as I said before, I don't do the mud bogging thing. I only navigate through a soup hole if there is no other way. I will not suffer the effects of running a mud tire just for the occasional mud hole. I do appreciate the sport of it and like to watch. All but a few of my riding buddies will jump right in.
For what I do these are the tires for me.

Glad your liking the Pra/holeshot set-up Rock, I told you you'd like them, and once everything break's in and loosen's up more, the more you'll like it, wait until about 400-500 miles, the power from the motor really comes alive them.....have fun, maintain the machine well and you will never miss the kodiak.....
