First of all, I'm trying (GN4) 20W50 for summer. The manual says 10W40 would work, but I am an aggressive rider and northern Minnesota summers get really hot. I sometimes ride for extended periods of time, so the heavier weight might give a little extra protection. I change my oil depending on how much I ride. If I have ridden 4 or 5 consecutive weekends, I change the oil and oil filter. Oil filter is only $6, so why not? I also take into account how long and hard I rode. At most, don't wait more than 6 weeks.

If you have a new machine, during break-in, there are much more contaminants in the oil. It would be a good idea to change the oil after you run the first full tank of fuel through the machine. After that, at least change when your owners manual says (more frequent is better for engine protection). Oil and filter change is cheap and takes 10 minutes.

I was told by the dealer to change it about every 15 or 20 hours of riding time. Make sure to check the oil before, during, and after riding. It's really important to keep an eye on the oil level of your 400EX.
