Default Cutting the slide spring ????

I read about cutting the slide spring a while back, but now I can't find any of the posts could you guys give me some help on what I need to do and if it is worth the time. I machined a end cap for my baja and it really rips with that thing on. after about 5-8 hrs. I took it off and it had a coating of black soot/ carbon would that tell me that I am still running a little rich. I did not re jet and am still running stock filter with lid on. what size jets do I need to be running? I live in So. Cal. in the high desert elevation 1700 ft. dry and hot climate.

Any help would be great.

Thanks
Tom

The slide spring is the long spring that comes out when you take the top of the carburator off. Some say to cut 6 for it is the "magic number". Me i cut about 5 to 5 1/2 off. Count from the top of the spring. While you are in there, pull the black slide out and drill the two little holes down at the bottom out with a 1/8" drill bit. Overall yes I did notice a big difference doing these two things along with the end cap mod. As far as the jetting goes, I could not tell you. Mine has the 195 in it, but i am also at approx. 900 ft. The only person I can think of at the top of my head that could help in the jetting area might be biggerisbetter.

good luck

I believe it has to do with the vacuum. I believe (someone correct me if im wrong) it allows for easier operation of the slide, and with the spring cut gives it less resistance. I know i felt a big snappier difference on mine

I think your running rich cause you still have to stock airfilter, with the lid on. I would atleast go to a K&N or Uni filter, and also make sure you put a couple big hose clamps around your airfilter intake tube, They tend to start colapsing aroung 5,000 RPMS,and this will also cause a Rich condition. after these simle mods try it again, thier is still alot of tuning we can do to the carb, but lets start here first.

BIgger.

I am doing the same mad as well I cut 4 1/2 off my spring, added the K+N 6500, rejetted to a 185 main w/ 2 1/4 turns on the mixture, and cut a 3" hole in my end cap. I have noticed a big increase in power, but my engine keeps cutting out at low RPMS (altitude 9' above sea level) Biggerisbetter you speak of putting additional hose clamps around the airfilter intake tube. Are you refering to the tube between the air filter and the carb or something else please elaborate also any help on the cutting out @ low RPMS would be appreciated

Turn idle mixture screw out to 3 turns and test. If better but still needs improvement, turn screw out to 4 turns. If better but still needs improvement, change pilot jet from 45 to #50.
