GAS GAS 450
#1
is anyone racing the gas gas 450 or seen one race on a mx track. we have a local dealer here that has been running the 2 stroke 300 and i have not been impressed with it at all on a mx track. one of our friends that races a cannondale rode it and sai he would never ride it again. he said it handled very bad on the mx track. the guy that races it for the dealer is a fair rider and always finishes at the rear of the pack. i was just wondering if the 450 was any better on a mx track.

I haven't personally seen one run but I read the reviews in one of the magazines a while back and they were mostly all bad.I have heard a few people raving about them on other sites so I wondered if it was just the magazine being a little biased but maybe not?

here's a very long thread that is worth the read about the Mickey Dunlap's FST Gas Gas 450
pro riders throw in thier reviews after testing it & compare it to a modded YFZ & other FST built GNCC quads.... they have modified the GG only mildly for GNCC racing so far, but will contine to build it in the near future... the thread is at about 11000 views
an interesting tidbit learned from the tread: suzuki LTZ/DRZ cams fit right in.

i have heard of a few gas gas running gncc or woods racing but none in mx. i would think the 52 inch width would have to be changed for gncc. the dealer here has a guy riding the 2 stroke and after only a couple of races the motor went south. talked to the mechanic who tore it down but cant remember what he told me went wrong with it. something came apart inside though.i know that they work on it all the time to keep it running. he has sold none in this area because people area fraid of the realiabilty issue with his demo quad. we had the same problem with the moto we ran. when it ran it was awesome but it was broke down all the time. the quad had 4 motors on it in less than a year.

most of the guys running gncc with GG's have narrower A-arms installed, they're available from at least two companies now. also, the ball joints have 1/2" adjustment, and you can loose another inch with 4+1 offset wheels. most people are having no real problems with thier 300 motor, mine runs great & LT250R91 has one that's run 15+ GNCC & other races the first 12 were on the first top end.... zero problems.

i run the 2 stokr in motocross, ive raced it all year and absolutely love it, as good as any machine out there after you set it up right, nothing comes perfect from the factory i got mine lowered and put new tires, and wheels on and a few other little things no problems with it that werent fixable or my fault after the bug were wore off as expected from new machine it was perfect, 4 strokes havent heard much about but they wouldnt sell me one cause of the reliability issues they had when it first came out but im sure they have worked them out and it will be an awesome machine

i just drilled new shock mounts 1 1/4 inch lower and adjust the shocks up to stop from bottoming out to lower the center of gravity and bought 1-4 offset wheels to cure the width problem im right on 50 in now the legal mark in mx put on 18 in holeshots on 8 in rims with beadlocks, cut silencer in half so the back bracket fits in the front brackets place, fixed the gas tank leak, check out gasgasatv.com for info on these things the silencer helped the low end a ton its amazing the difference it made of course the smaller tires and lowereing the quad helped out the most of anything no problems with the handling now, and it cured the hard steering proble

i just talked to my dealer about the thumper, they sold one 450 & 2 300's so far. the 450 is having bugs worked out still, but the 300's are strong runners. gasgas is a 2-stroke company and has been for years, they know how to build them strong, smooth, powerful & reliable. i'm really surprised more people that race have not taken serious note of them... i'm now running a short fall series at a local MX track... 3 races to go in it; i'll probly make 3rd overall in open class. i may hit some other tracks soon...

Ive got over 800 miles on my 300 and not a problem at all, and im running it primaraly in the dunes wich is allways harder on machines. I have ran it with a bunch of machines and it pretty much holds its own, I think with a mill job on the head and some race mix gas it will be pulling some serious speed on the hills. But as far as trails and play riding goes I love it. Plus the fact its the only one in utah and idaho the dune capitals..
??? about cutting the silencer down what type of blade would work? I was thinking about doing it but affraid of making it all jagged and crappy looking.... another thing i did is run a small strip of wheather stripping adhisive type around the head light cowling to keep water and dust out works great!!

as of right now we have turned down the deal with the gas gas delaer. he got new a-arms from world class but now the quad is only 46 inches wide in the front end. my son rode it last tuesday and the arms cured the hard steering problem but now the quad handles terrible. it was real tippy in the cornere and the front tires dug in. he says he is just not comfortable on the quad and doesnt feel confidnt to do much of anything on the track. he is much faster on his honda than the gas gas so w will stick with it for now. we have told the dealer if he gets the other a-arms to stretch it to 49 3/4 inches, adds a steering stabilizer, 18 inch rear tires, 19 inch fronts that we would be willing to try the quad again.
