Default removing the 4 from 4 x 4

I just got a Scrambler 400 X, which is 4 x 4, i originally did not want this but its excellent condition and cheap price pursuaded me to buy it. I was wondering about removing the front wheel drive, aka the shaft and mini pumpkin. I have not yet checked out to see what connects the trans to the front wheel drive, but im guessing a shaft. I was wondering if u could just take it off and put it on as you please. Im guessing this wont cause a problem but then again, ive never owned a four-wheel drive......

Thanks a lot

Yah why would you want to remove the 4x4. They can be the fastest 4x4's out. Just think an HPD 80hp race mod on a 4x4. NO 4x4 would touch it and most 2x4's would not even come close.Being able to beat Banshees,ds650,yfz,Raptors and all with 4x4. Sounds like a dream quad to me.

Yeah why no 4x4? 4x4 can be a very great thing especially on tricky terrain.

Dude I have a 97 scrambler 4x4 with the aaen 440 kit 39 mm carb and verry rarely get beat. my buddy has over 10K in his banshee and an alky 400 with race cam and hi comp. piston can. But when they see thet Polaris with 4x4 on the side people do take notice. Keep the 4x4. its only 50 pds. difference.

haha you guys are funny,
while at first i was only thinking about the weight penalties, i remembered i dont race MX and that 4wd is growing on me, and i notice an excellent increase in traction and traction equals acceleration. I jetted it down because it was pig (way too rich) and now im wondering about hop-ups. While im not saying it has any lack of power, i was wondering about an HPd Pipe,HPd silencer (atq) k&n (so it dosent take ten minutes to rejet) and a clutch kit. I kno this stuff gets awesome praise but i wanted to kno it anybody has this particular setup.
Thanks a lot

A clutch kit will really help. I had a 2001 and went through the same stuff. Go with a better filter and clean it often. There's free H.P. in the intake of the air box. Pull the rubber snorkle off and remove the baffle from the top of the box with the two little air tubes. I cut the whole divider out and trimmed back the small end of the rubber snorkle to create a bigger opening. In stock form, you could actually watch the rubber snorkle contract when you rev'd in neutral. With this done you may have to go up a size in jetting if you already went down. Watch the plug. Mine came with steel rims and aluminum helped, along with maxis razors. I had .020 removed from the head (40.00) Carb boring was 35.00 and seemed to also help some. My wife had the same machine so I would let my brother ride it to race mine. It all helped and before we sold them both I could pull about a 40' lead in a 300'-400' drag race. I never piped it because of noise.
