Default Overheating on sp600

While riding yesterday on my sp600 a couple of times the temp lite started flashing on the odo once I got onto the road and got up to speed (30-40 mph) it went off only to come on again after riding down the side of the road for about 5 miles at that sustained speed. Checked it and it was full of antifreeze, it only has about 225 miles on it. The radiator wasn't blocked in front.
Anyone else had this problem?
If so what did you do, it's out of warrantee so I'll try to fix it myself.
Thanks

Hi dcatt,
No advice on your overheating problem but I am thinking of purchasing the sp600. Let me know how much you like (or dislike) your machine so far... I'm hesitating between the sp600 and sp500HO. Thanks.

I have an 03 700 and had an overheat prob. The light was coming on and eventually the plastic T connector on the left side blew. After 2 months in the shop getting everything replaced, the tech decided to look at the BACK of the radiator. Clogged as heck he said. If you have been mudding (and I was) the fins get pretty plugged. Take of the front rack and take of the front panel to get to the back. Make sure it runs clear and you can see thru. Haven't had a problem yet.....except had to go back and pull a friend's Rincon out of some stuff. Their stock tires suck!! So don't ride too hard or too fast.......you might have to go back thru and get your friends!!

I like mine so far, there are a couple of things that I don't like about it but you probably would have the same problems with a 500 as well. One is having to stop and put it in low when you come up on a very slow area, like the owners manual says, and then having to stop and put it in high when you get through it. I've heard that a clutch kit will make a big difference in that. The other thing is the gas milage, if you use low very much, it uses quite a bit of gas. I have a buddy that has a 500 and the power difference is evident on the 600.
I ride with mostly, probably 95% hondas, and you will get all kinds of looks and questions from them that's for sure. The rear suspension blows their mind, of course anything would when compared to a honda's rear suspension

Hi dcatt,
Thanks for your advice. I guess bad gas mileage is the price to pay for the 600's extra pop. Is the fuel economy acceptable when you ride 25-45 mph in high gear?
I have almost made up my mind. My test drive of the sp600 did it for me and I have been getting good feedback from sp600 owners. On top of that, my dealer has a great deal as he needs to move his 2004 models so he can make room for the 2004.5
The Carlisle tires they put on the 2004.5 model look somewhat unaggressive so I'll stick with the 2004 deal and get the Rawhides.
Take care and I hope the riding has been good in Tennessee.

Hey Danzig, I get about the same mileage with my 600 as I did with my 01 500. The 600 steers alot better and has so much more low end torque. I have 2800 miles on my 600 and it runs like a top.

Make sure there is no air in the radiator, even a small amount will mke the system not work right, do a search I've seen the instructions for "burping" the system posted.

I love my 600, it's been great. and a lilltle clutch work makes a big diffrence, I don't put mine in low unless I'm crawling over a log. I get 80-90 miles per tank on mixed trail riding.

Hey Snosnake,
Thanks for the info. I will be buying the sp600 (green with black rims). I test drove it again and I like the extra punch it has over the 500HO. I am going on a long ride next month so I'll keep everyone posted on how much I like it.

Thanks for the info guys, I am going to take it back to the dealer and let them look at it,because it's still under warantee.
Danzig, my 600 gets much better milage running it in high gear.
Riding is good in Tennessee but, it's about deer season down here and that eliminates a lot of riding areas, these hunters get very irate when you ride during hunting season anywhere within 100 miles of their area, even when they are not even in the woods.

Hey dcatt,
Same situation up here in Quebec. The hunting season is kicking into high gear. A few areas closed to ATV riders but overall, hunters are fairly accepting of us riding around. We hear gun shots once in a while when we stop for a break. I guess that's part of the excitement!! I will be picking up my brand new '04 Sp600 either late this week or early next. Can't wait. Take care.
