Yesturday I picked up my new 04 Sportsman 700. I only have 2 miles on it. ------ Just as I start moving from a dead stop in high range, somewhere it sounds like in the drive train, you hear a knock or clunk. My wife even noticed it. She thinks it is coming from the right rear side. Is it normal? Has anyone else had this in a 700.

 

it could be the secondary releasing, does it do it in low? does it make any "clunks" while your moving?

 

OK---I just went out and rode it. It does not seem to make a noticeable noise when starting out in low range. But each and every time I start in high range it makes a pretty loud knock. The sound is like if you took a hammer and lightly tapped the side of the motor or trans.

 

I know my 600 will do that also, it was a little disconcerting at first, but I got used to it. it's as you described a light tap when the clutch first engages, basically it's downshifting, the primary closes and grabs the belt, that resets the secondary. It sounds worse than it really is. it'll also make noise like a clicking if you gradually let off the throttle as you slow down, thats also normal and part of the way the secondary handles the EBS function.

Ride it for a while, you'll stop noticing it.....
