i was thinking............

this afternoon, i saw an rx-7 fly down the road and this got me thinking. Why not put a rotory engine in a quad frame? sure it might be a little pricey, but what the heck. When you think about the rotory design, it might be far be tter suited for off roading considering its light weight and its power dilivery characteristics, not to mention the relitivly few moving parts. What do the rest of you think?

It would be awesome! A 13B RX-7 engine is about the size of a beer keg so you'd have to start with a frame that will hold it. If you can find an older 12B, they were slightly smaller. The rotary engine block is mostly aluminum with cast iron "cylinders" in between the aluminum sections. I don't know the total weight but one guy can lift it off the ground. A transmission might be difficult but a centrifugal clutch wouldn't be impossible. With the potential to spin at 12K rpm, you could have all kinds of fun with gearing. Do it and then post pics!!!:-)

hey, is a rotary engine ne thing like a rotax (or is it rotrax?) engine? cuz if it is, then the DS 650 has one. if u look at some posts in this dune section of the site, u will see one about a new V-twin engine that is supposedly awesome. u might wanna check that out.

A rotax engine is the name bombarier artic cat and sea doo use for there motors. A rotary engine would be sick in a quad if they made a smaller version. I don't think a 200+hp motor would work out too well in a quad. You'd need a insanly strong chain which would add alot of weight and a axle that wouldn't twist off the line when you started to go... maybe it would work on a desert racing machine but no mx for sure. I know a guy who put a gsxr 1100 motor in a quadzilla and only use's it for the desert. It weighs a frikin ton but hauls some mad ***! Also the older rx 7 has a rotary motor and so does the rx 8

The is rotary engines in snowmobiles. OMC (johnson/evinrude) had 2 kinds of engines 45 and 35 hp. these I can lift so they are not major boat ancors. when all the shroud is off of them they are compact. the only down side is that it is fan cooled and the engines do run hot. Also artic cat had rotaries that were around 20-24 hp. I dont know how much you are looking to spend but Freedom motors makes a 500 cc motor but It is not in production so it would be spendy. for one engine. i hope this help. I will comment on the omc motors that they have tons of torque very fun to run.
