Most people recommend a fresh hone job.
Torque specs: cylinder studs - 44 ft/lbs
head bolts - 24 ft/lbs
cam girdle, valve cover, exterior cylinder bolts - 89 in/lbs
Earlier posts say torque is very important on cams.
Good luck!!!

Oh yeah, engine has to be tilted forward to have clearance for the head to be taken off. All nuts are loctited so I had to heat the nut to get it off. Some guys grind the frame the first time so this does not have to be done again. Also is a good time to install dual valve springs if cams are in your future, saves a $55 head gasket!!!!

you'll need round end allen wrenchs to get the intake off or at least that middle top screw. other than that make sure you have everything at tdc and life should be good. oh and you might want to get new nuts for the head studs if you didn't buy new ones.

I ground the support bracket back instead of tilting the motor. Worked well for me.
You get your base and head gaskets also? With the new piston I would get some clutch springs also. 24$ most places. Since your in there I would replace the water pump seals. I got burned by that one.

Yes, to everything above.
Make sure your cylinder reliefs are aiming the correct direction.
If you are staying with the stock bore, you should be fine using your stock rings - (that way you don't have to gap them.) Be careful when taking them off - they will break!
Assembly lube! - get some and apply it to the wrist pin and inside of the crank pin so you have lubrication upon initial start-up.
Towels - use towels stuffed in your cases to catch any items that may get dropped accidentally down (like a circlip from the wrist pin.)
Are you putting new cams in too? Make sure you put assembly lube on the cam journals.
Also, I find it easier to put the piston / cylinder on with the crank locked at TDC. Make yourself one of these TDC Bold
Don't know how large of an e-mail attatchment you can get but, I have all the torque specs in a .pdf file (about 7 megs.) (Just need an e-mail address.)
Note on torque specs. (some are INCH/POUNDS and some are FOOT/POUNDS) Don't mix these up! Double check the torque wrench before you use it.
Send a PM to the guys on here that you would like to get a phone number from for when you have some questions. You can easily spend a couple beers looking at something that someone on here could answer for you in about a minute if you get them on the phone.

o.k. so i need to order need head nuts, chain tensioner crush washer, and w.p. gaskets. i ordered a cp piston 11.5:1. are the rings pregapped? i have assembly lube, base gasket, headgasket, piston, ring, pin. i am doing alot at once. piston, carb, and switching to alky. when doing so many things it leaves alot of room for things to go wrong. so any little thing you guys can tell me ill listen to help make this go smooth.
