ATV Purchase - Out of state - Shipping to California
#1
I'm in the process of purchasing a new ATV. San Diego dealerships seem to be in to price fixing and tend to give the consumer the run around. I've found a place in Colorado, www.fremontmotorsports.com, that has very good prices and is willing to ship the bike to California. Has anyone ever done anything like this, or dealt with these people? What issues will I face in getting it registered in California? Thanks for any info.

Also, the dealerships here all want to charge MSRP + tax, licsense, documentation, freight and setup. None of them will tell you over the phone or via email what the latter two charges amount to. Does anyone know what is reasonable and customary for these charges? Thanks.

Around here (Tennessee) the dealers that charge for freight and set-up charge about $125 for each of those - about $250 per bike total. It varies a little from dealer to dealer and from bike to bike. I've found that the dealerships that are closer to the cities or higher population areas will charge the set up and freight fees while dealerships that are more out in the country will just add sales tax.

When you go to register it, the DMV will charge you sales tax!! Not sure about smog regulations??? At most dealerships, freight and setup can be several hundred dollars (each!). What kind of bike are you looking for??? You need to establish yourself as a good customer at a dealership you like, then you can walk in and feel free to ask for a few hundred dollars off a new bike. Even Chaparral gave me $400 off the Z when they first came out, and were selling very well.

I'm going through the same thing... This seems to be the buying season for those here in SoCal. Bert's in west covina is completly sold out on those and they usually have 8 to 10 in stock all the time. And good luck trying to find a YFZ450 around here. Waiting lists everywhere. I'm pulling my hair out. I should of picked a raptor up a month ago. I'll let you know if I find anyone willing to deal.

Chaparral has a steady supply of YFZ's (they say they sell 2 per day). You may be right about Raptors being in short supply. I don't remember seeing many on the dealers floors lately???

how much riding do you do on state land???? do you really need that green sticker???
i just bought a quad in oregon and avoided sales tax all together. I paid 6835 OTD for a brand new YFZ450 with 2 years Oregon ATV registration. I rarely ride on the state land where you need a green sticker. Either way Cali wont give a green or red sticker to any vehicle purchased new out of state for 6 months.
Im just gonna wait 6 months and then go an register it ... if they try to give me a hard time I will just transfer ownership to my old lady.
oh .... and DONT PAY FOR FREIGHT, SETUP OR ANY OTHER BS FEES!!!! you can find a dealer that wont make you pay em!!! especially on a Raptor. Keep calling around!!! try dealers outside of San Diego in less populated suburbs. good luck!

You do need the green sticker to transport the bike on a trailer. All the time, I have the CHP pulling up next to me and checking for stickers. No problem with an enclosed trailer though!
