picking up a 2001 scrambler saturday...what am i in for?
#1
Hey guys, I'm picking up my 2001 yellow scrambler 500 HO 4x4 this saturday. I've owned an '86 honda fourtrax 200sx (still own), an '89 suzuki 250 quad sport, and a '94 polaris 250 trail boss i bought used in '96. Of those quads, i loved the polaris the most, but unfortunately i only had it for 2 weeks before it was stolen from me. Some of my buddies are getting back into riding again and i needed a quad that was great all around that i could use for pulling logs around the yard and working in the mud, but also could take out and play with like a sport bike. The scrambler 500 4x4 seemed to fit the bill pretty well. I found one that already has some performance mods done and also has full aluminum skidplating underneath. It can been seen here on ebay:

Anyway, i loved the other polaris i had, and i hope i like this one even more and i'll make sure it doesn't get stolen! I really don't know much at all about this quad, so if there's any newbie info you guys think i should know, feel free to tell me about it before i kill myself or ruin the bike.
Also, i'll be riding mainly with a YFZ 450, a 660 raptor, and a giant 700 kawasaki 4x4 monster suv thing (that's actually pretty damn fast...i had it up to 64), and my buddy on my old suzuki 250 (bored out to 280 w/ racing piston). Just curious if you guys have any comments as to how well i'll hang with these guys on this slightly modified scrambler. I know the YFZ is insanely fast, but all i really care about is being able to hang with the big 4x4 kawasaki so i'm at least not left in the dust. We don't do super aggressive riding/racing, but it's nice to be able to hold your own occasionally when you find an open road or field.
Thanks in advance for any input or advice!

The one that I'm getting at least wasn't inaccurately priced, and i've exchanged several emails back and forth with the guy and he seems pretty legit. I've got the VIN # of the bike and his name, and am getting a cashier's check for it and am meeting him in Kentucky to exchange the check and some cash for the bike. So I at least know that I'll get the bike in return and won't be waiting for shipping and worrying.

Krash80, What did you have to give for this machine? It looks pretty clean, buts it’s hard to tell anything for sure on a picture. You should love your Scrambler. They require a bit more maintenance the some to the others. Grease it often, lube chain are the ones you need to do the most often. Congrats and have fun!

Yes, Ebay has been plagued with ATV scams lately. They are obvious though. I bough my scrambler on Ebay a last year and had no problems. Sounds like you got a good deal, and at least you will make the exchange in person

Also be careful about buying a modded quad. I don't think I'd ever buy one with engine mods. Skids, handguards, tires, maybe, but you never know how bad they may have messed things up. You can never tell what they actually put the thing through until you've had it for a while. The last guy I bought one from told me that it had never been wrecked and so on. I have found signs that it has been flipped, bent, and ridden much harder than they let on. You can't trust anyone these days. Now this is Ebay, so I guess you're stuck with it now, but look it over. If it has a new graphics kit, you might want to try rubbing the fenders with something. The guy that had my quad flipped it, put a new grahpics kit on, and filled in the scratches with scratch remover. Nothing showed up until I washed it. People these days...
Good luck with the Scrambler man, hope it works out.

I dont think you will have any trouble keeping up on the trails. Scrammys have lots of power and are very fun to ride. The do require more maintenance as was already mentioned. You will love it. They are bad.

Thanks for the positive feedback on the bike. I'm paying 4k$ for it, which is right around retail according to the guy at the bank who gave me the loan for it, but buying from a private party i don't have to pay any sales tax or anything...so it's not a screaming deal like one of the scam bikes from ebay , but it seems like a good average price. Plus it looks like he spent a good few hundred dollars in mods like those skidplates and pipes and other stuff.
I'll be back late saturday night with the quad and am going riding on sunday...i'll let you guys know what i think!
