Questions of Why? Advance/Retard timing, port and polish.

Im guessing he means a 4 stroke since he says polish? I dunno what timing hes talking about though, cam timing or ignition timing. Porting helps though by making the path the air takes through the head clearer. Polishing happens on the exhaust side and keeps carbon build up from forming for a while and makes the flow better. Cam timing adjusts at what revs the bulk of the power will be, advancing ignition timing makes more power all over, makes it run hotter, and makes it more likely to ping/detonate. Retarding it makes it run cooler, loose power all over, and less likely to ping (would be used with turbo or nitrous etc.. to prevent engine damage at high levels of boost or nitrous)

Was running like a raped ape before the oil pump went kaput again. Felt like it added an extra 2 or 3 hp mostly on top end. Now im finnally puttin an RD engine in it though soon as I get it back from being bored.

thanks for the help, you were right i was talking about a four stroke. Sorry i wasn't specific enough. Just one more question where could you get this done or what tools would you need if you should do it yourself (if that's what you should do)? And one question to jakal, you seem to know a little about this stuff, what would advance/retard timing do to a 2 stroke. (ignition or cam whichever one you can answer) thanks

2 strokes dont have cams, you have to have them ported and it does a whole lot but makes the piston/rings wear out faster. Advancing their timing adds power all over just like a 4 stroke but it also makes them more likely to blow up since they are finiky. The only way I can think of to advance the timing on modern a fourstroke other than special flywheel key thing is to just buy an aftermarket CDI. For the cam you need a degree wheel and you need an adjustable sprocket or one you dont mind slotting. You run the risk of hitting the valves with the piston if you go too far either direction though. I doubt it would be worth it with a stock cam though. These are mostly only things you would to a race motor. If your wanting power from your play bike its better to just buy a cam, or exhaust, maybe a higher compression piston etc...... these mods are really for extracting that last little bit. Except ignition timing on two strokes, lots of people like to do that with just a new key.
