I'm just a rookie MX racer but I'm finding that faster is definetely smoother in the whoops. Keep your weight back and stay on the throttle, better for me near the top of a gear than the bottom of the next.

it all depends on the track and the depth of the whoops...most ATV tracks are shallow and you can grab a fist full of throttle and lean/pull back. ocassionaly you come across a track that accomodates bikes and quads and the whoop section(s) can get deep and spaced further apart. here, i try and time myself and get a rythm going...and jump every other whoop.
try and get to the track your riding/racing a little earlier and see what the other riders are doing. take the time and understand the lines they are taking.

With the weight of my bike and myself, I just kinda cut right through them! Kinda like a ice breaker running through a frozen river.
