When I had my Rancher, it started to squeek on one side. So, I took the shock out and greased the bushings and the squeek went away for good. So if it starts squeeking, try that.

I have a '98 and I haven't had much trouble at all. I just replaced 2 front wheel bearings this year which isn't bad after 5 years running, 4 of those with 27" tires!!! He'll have fun with that bike for sure.
Make sure you keep the oil changed per owners manual and get the vavles adjusted after 1st 200 miles and once a year after. Its regular maintenance on a 4 stroke bike.

If he is riding in mud and water all the time, he may wan't to pull his hubs and regrease his wheel bearings every once in a while, or just go and buy the sealed bearings from hilifter and then he will never have to worry about it. A front disc brake conversion is something he should look into if he rides in the mud and water a lot. Other than that he has a solid quad. The only squeeking I had was in my steering stem bushing. I loosened it off and gave it a little grease and it has been fine ever since.
