Ticking Sound !?!?! HELP, what is it?
#1
Ok my header bolt broke i took it o the shop they fixed it but they had to take it off to get the bolt out then put it back togeahter it made a ticking sound afterwords they adjusted the valves 3 times it still did it, i rode it and then adjusted them myself and it still did it, then 3 rides later i floated a valve, so i put a new JE piston in it, then had the head sent off and a new valve put in scince it broke the valve guide to, i put it all back togeather, and it makes a TICKING sound STILL but louder this time..... it runs fine and everything but just ticks... it's from the top end you can hear it, do you guys think it's ok to ride?, i've got about 30 mins on it in the woods and it seems to run fine... i just checked the valves again and there good. all the fluids are good and it's getting oil, what could be my problem?

the bore is stock and the piston is a JE, brand new, not a high comp...... the only thing thats different from a stock bike is that i used honda high temp instead of buying a gasket for the top..... would that make a difference, i know the gasket is prolly thicker then the temp i used..... the cam is stock also, like i said it runs great, but unless your over 1/3 throttle you can really hear it ticking, then it gets cut out by the exaust noise..........

I didn't realize that JE made a low compression piston for the Raptor. Do you mean that you did not go with the highest compression piston available.....and elected too use the 10.75/1 piston? This is still a big change from stock. This piston in conjunction with the stock cam is gonna build some serious cylinder pressure down low.....no doubt enough for DETONATION. What kind of fuel are you running? At what altitude do you ride?

ya thats the piston i put in it, would i need to run race gas with that piston? whats a raptors stock? and it seemed to run great on regular gas, a little octane boost help? I am riding at about 2500ft now but 99.9 % of my riding is done at the coast......... everything else is stock as far as carbs and stuff go, it has the CT H.O. kit on it with the jets they say to use and it worked great before..... could one of the rocker arms be messed up? i just don't understand what could make that clicking noise, it changes speed with the RPM of the motor to and it's in the top end..... THANKS for any help you can give me, alot cheaper then taking it to a shop and footing a $400.00 bill

Check your plug. Look for Detonation or running lean. with the up in Comp. you should at minimum run 92 Octane fuel. Do you have the stock cam? This could be an issue for the cyl. pressure as Gary660r said.

well if i go to a stage 2 hot cam, then i need to get beter valve springs....... can you say MoMoney I've always ran premium in it, and i think octane on it is 92 but not shure...... why would the cam make it tick? would the valves need differnet tolerences with that new piston? or does that only change wih the cam?

I'm thinking the ticking that your hearing could be detonation. The stock cam doesn't have as much overlap vs a stage 1 or stage 2. Overlap being the amount of degree's the Intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time. You should be able to tell if your problem is detonation or not. If your jetting is lean would cause this also. You could use a stage I cam and not have to do the valve springs. If that is indeed the problem. There isn't probebly one of us that has ran a high comp. or 10.75:1 piston with the stock cam. If there is maybe they could speak up. Good luck.
