My buddy's Rincon beats my 04.5 SP600 by 3-4 quad lengths repeatedly in 1/4 mile drags. I top out at about 52mph (speedo). The bike has 200 miles on it so it should be loosened up by now. I thought these SP's do 60+. What's going on?

waderman,
I'm not sure what to tell you about your speed. (Remember though, you do have about 150 pounds on him). I can get my 600 up to about 62-64 mph on a flat paved road. It's got stock clutching and can take my buddies Grizz 660 from a start, them he slowly gets about 2 lengths ahead and stays, but I catch up on top end. But when when hook our winches together, it's no contest. I can drag him anywhere. And I can go in mud better than he can. If your buddy thinks his Rincon is so bad, ask him to hook it up to your 600, and I'll bet you'll drag him around like a toy. The Rincons also can't go in deep mud like our 600s can. They can't turn the tires, I've seen it at the Trailfest - Hatfield/McCoy Trail-WV.

I'll tell you though, a K&N filter and 160 main jet on mine seemed to help in the breathing dept. It also doesn't backfire in the sub 30 degree F temps too.

Good luck!

Hey motorist,

I put a k & N on my 03 600.. it woke up a little.. Do you suggest rejetting? I noticed when it was warming up yesterday a lot of smoke and a little sputter. Is that because of the filter?

Thanks,

Hank

Ride NH!

With the addition of a better flowing air filter, such as the K&N, the engine is getting more air. With no other changes, more air and same jetting makes the engine run leaner. Adding a larger jet lets in more fuel. What the engine needs is more intake mixture (air and fuel). If you changed the jet (main jet is 155), to a bigger size (I put in a 160), it will be more efficient. It also helps in the winter with backfiring.

52 that sounds kind of slow. My buddy has a 600 and he can keep up pretty good to my scrambler. I bet his can go at least 60

pop off your clutch cover, take out the center bolt and cover off of your motor clutch.the factory uses a plastic nut on top of the spider.
This nut has probably backed off a little. It will hit the cover plate as you shift out,and stop you from shifting out all the way.If it is backed off,the belt can not go to the top of the primary clutch. Just put it in your pocket,so next time you drive over a bridge you can toss it in the water while passing.

Nowadays there's not much difference in quality from maker to maker.....it's too competitive and people aren't as brand specific as they used to be....

I'm sure I could find as many rotted out HONDA carcasses as I could Polaris, as Kawisuki, as Yamaha....etc...
