How does the 400EX motor compare to the 350X motor? I am considering buying a 400EX and used to own an 85 350X. I loved the way it ran but didn't like the rest of it. It sounds like the 400EX has both handling and great motor.

A stock 350x engine has about 23hp, Stock 400ex is about 26.5. The difference is the 350x builds revs much quicker do to it's shorter stroke. Don't forget, you get a 6 speed tranny with the 350x, they will dust a stock 400ex in a long drag. If you throw $1000 into the 350x engine you can have yourself a 45hp bike all day long . They respond very well to modifications. Once again, TC Racing is the tuner of choice. They had numerous 350's at Red Bud, all of which were very fast. I believe one of 'em won the open 4-stroke and walked away from a 400/426 Yamaha.

I talked to my dealer and he said the stock 400ex has 34 horse power.

I race a 350X motor in a 300EX frame in Missouri and Illinois harescrambles. I have only put a high compression piston in mine and bored one over. It hangs pretty well with 400EX's in drags, but the 400's still win, even though I have 6 gears. The 350X motor is geared very strange. They put 6 gears in it but the gear ratios are close and they obviously didn't do it for top speed. In harescrambles horsepower doesn't matter, I have beat many 400EX's but I have also seen someone take it all on a completey stock 300EX.

The sales certificate from Honda does say that the 400EX has 34 horsepower, but I doubt it. That might be the horsepower for the XR400R dirtbike. I know they had to tune the engine where it wouldn't be as powerful. That way, they could put it in a quad frame. That's just my opinion about the horsepower. I do know that the 400EX has plenty of power. From what I've seen at the local MX track, with some engine mods, they will scream.

is that at the wheels or at the crank? I bet it is at the crank because on dyno they are somewhere around the 28 area. Still one of the best quads out. Hopfully it will still hang with all of the new quads comming soon. it did beat the Ds 650 in an overall judgment according to dirt wheels.
